‘I’m happy here’: Is it time for Liverpool to wave goodbye?

Pepe ReinaAfter many successful seasons between the sticks for Liverpool it was a shame to see Pepe Reina get shipped off to Napoli last summer. Over the years, he’s been one of the Reds most consistent performers and it was difficult to imagine somebody replacing him.

That was until Simon Mignolet’s arrival at Anfield. The former Sunderland stopper has made an immediate impact for the Reds and at just 25-years-old (relatively young for a goalkeeper), he’s likely to wear the number one jersey for quite some time.

He’s made 28 appearances already this season and looks like the real deal. He commands his area well, is strong in the air and has excellent shot-stopping ability. I’d argue that he’s more or less the complete package.

But where does this leave Pepe Reina, a player who will be returning to Anfield in the summer? The Spanish star recently spoke to the Press about his future. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m very happy here and my family’s happy too. I’ll be here right to the end, but not even I know what will happen after. I’m here now, but I’ve got to return to Liverpool, although it’s unlikely I’ll stay there.

Benitez was the most important figure in me arriving here. He convinced me to join this ambitious project at a great club. Obviously I also wanted to get to know a different league, while it was Liverpool who took the first step by not wanting me anymore because they were placing their faith in a younger goalkeeper.” (Source: The Mirror)

From those comments, it’s clear that he’s enjoying his stay in Italy. We also know that he wanted to move to Arsenal earlier in his Liverpool career. Whilst he was a loyal servant for the Reds, I can’t help but feel that he’s fancied a new challenge for quite some time. Napoli have granted him his wish.

So perhaps it’s time for Liverpool fans to let go. Losing Reina is a blow, but Brendan Rodgers has already drafted in a top replacement. The future’s looking bright for the Reds and Simon Mignolet is likely to be a massive part of that.

What’s your take? Is it time to wave goodbye to Pepe Reina? Is Simon Mignolet a worthy replacement?

Can’t see him back at Anfield, they wont pay his wages, pity though, i think he’s much better than Mignolet.
