Has this Liverpool star earned a new deal?

Jordan HendersonJordan Henderson is a funny character. He’s the type of footballer who can infuriate one game and delight the next. You never quite know which version of Henderson will turn up: the world-beater, or the sluggish, ineffectual oaf who can’t seem to string a pass together.

When Henderson joined the Reds in summer 2011, he did so with a massive price-tag strung around his neck. He cost Kenny Dalglish £20m, which would be a massive fee for an established star, let alone for somebody who had yet to prove himself at the top level.

It’s little wonder really that he was slow to adapt and to win the fans over. Indeed, his first season with The Reds was something of a write off.

Still, he was ever present. He made 48 appearances but only managed to find the back of the net 2 times. His all round game also disappointed.

In his second season with the Reds, he started to show signs of improvement. His passing was quicker and more accurate and he demonstrated a little more confidence in front of goal, scoring 6 times.

This year he’s been even better. He’s a dynamic presence who carries the ball well, takes up good positions and links up well with the Reds strikers. At 23-years-old, he really seems to be coming into his own. Indeed, with Steven Gerrard entering the autumn of his career, Henderson is now a very important member of Liverpool’s squad.

As such, I wasn’t surprised to see The Metro claim that Henderson would be offered a new contract at the end of the season. He’s clearly won over Brendan Rodgers and is slowly but surely winning over the fans too.

Either way you cut it, Henderson has just two years left on his current deal. With the potential that this player has, the Reds would be foolish to let him slip out from under their grasp.

Getting him tied down to a long-term deal, even if it means granting him a pay-rise, is a smart move. Brendan Rodgers has spent much of his time at Anfield building for the future. Granting Henderson a new deal could be the next logical step along this path.

What’s your take? Has Jordan Henderson earned a new Liverpool deal?
