William CarvalhoWhilst Manchester United have plenty of other things to worry about, I’m sure that David Moyes will have some concerns about the current state of his defense.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both out of contract in the summer (and also aging and injury prone), this issue could well sneak up on the club if not handled quickly and efficiently.

Yes, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are promising defenders. But would you stake a title challenge on them? That’s what the club needs to aim for next season and if they’re to achieve this goal, they’ll need to bring in some reinforcements.

He spent the January transfer window attempting to fix the creativity issue in his midfield. And now we’re hearing news that he could also be looking to add some defensive edge to this area of the park.

The Mail claim that Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder, William Carvalho for the 8th time this season.

There’s a chance that United’s scouts just enjoy spending time in Portugal, but there’s also a good chance that David Moyes is interested in this player. Perhaps he sees Carvalho as additional protection for Evans and Smalling, who will need all the help they can get.

I still think that United need to sign another centre-back to shore themselves up at the back, but signing Carvalho will certainly help.

The 21-year-old is a seriously talented individual, who’s physically tough, hard-working and confident when on the ball. He’s the type of defensive midfielder who can quickly turn defence into attack and I have little doubt that he’ll be a massive asset for Manchester United, should he make the move.

But he won’t come cheap. The Mail note that he has a £37.5m release clause written into his contract. I doubt that Manchester United will have to spend that much to get their man, but it’s clear that Sporting wont let him go without a fight.

The signs are there that David Moyes is pulling the club in the right direction. Progress is slow, but if he continues to make smart signings like this, success will surely follow.

What’s your take? Would William Carvalho be a smart transfer target for The Red Devils?

Man Utd need him and they need to look at signing younger players. £37 million is to much but I’m sure a deal worth £20 million can be reached for the player. Moyes needs to rebuild the spine of the team and Carvalho could be important for the long-term.

United need carvalho. No matter at what price, but to get a young talented player like him, moyes need to scratch the united’s pocket this next window.
