Eliaquim MangalaWith the January transfer window now closed, what better to focus on than when the market re-opens in the summer?

I’m sure we’re all sick of hearing transfer riff-raff, having been on the end of a number of spurious rumours over the last month or so. But for Manchester United, it’s not like real football is providing much reason for joy either.

This season has been one big slap in the face for United fans, as their new manager has failed to adapt to his new surroundings. David Moyes has had to contend with a bucket-load of injuries, plenty of old weary legs and players like Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck, who don’t seem to have the requisite quality to play for the Red Devils.

Whilst Manchester United were unlucky throughout their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City, they have been picking up results like this all season long. One poor result could be considered a mistake, but when there’s a string of them and your club’s wedged firmly in the middle of the Premier League table, you’re in the middle of a crisis.

The January transfer window has supplied Manchester United fans with the one moment of pure joy that they have had all season long: the signing of Juan Mata.

If The Mirror is to be believed, the summer could throw out another of these moments. They claim that David Moyes will join the battle to sign FC Porto’s dynamic centre-back, Eliaquim Mangala this summer, despite his £35m price-tag.

It seems that Moyes has a penchant for players with huge price-tags. This is pretty exciting news for Manchester United fans.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both out of contract in the summer, signing a new centre-back is essential. Signing somebody with Mangala’s quality, however, could help to make the transition into a new look defence a lot easier.

At just 22-years-old, Mangala already has a wealth of talent at his disposal. He’s quick along the turf, strong on and off the ball, dominant in the air and he also knows how to position himself.

His price-tag is probably based on his potential, but he’s got plenty to offer in the here and now. If Moyes does have the chutzpah to chase him when the transfer window re-opens, I’ll be very impressed indeed.

Roll on the summer transfer window. Let’s just hope that United hang in their in the meantime.

What’s your take? Would Eliaquim Mangala help soup up the Red Devil’s defence?
