Are Spurs already trying to replace Roberto Soldado? Would this Brazilian sensation be a good choice?

|

Diego CostaWith the knowledge that Gareth Bale was set to leave the club last summer, plenty of rash decisions were made by Andre Villas-Boas and Daniel Levy alike. In the end, Spurs’ numerous signings played out like the footballing version of Supermarket Sweep.

Villas-Boas grabbed his shopping cart, steered it around Europe and snapped up numerous players who he thought were capable of replacing their Welsh wizard. Unfortunately, his trolley-dash approach appears to have been a bit hit and miss. The likes of Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela just don’t look capable of competing in the Premier League.

And then there’s Roberto Soldado, who was brought in to help pick up some of the goalscoring slack in Gareth Bale’s absence. After developing a fantastic reputation in La Liga and scoring goals for fun with Valencia, he arrived at White Hart Lane with a big reputation to uphold.

Unfortunately, he’s been unable to do this. In 26 performances, this Spaniard has scored 10 goals. That’s an okay return, but it’s worth remembering that five of these finishes have come from the penalty spot. And let’s not forget the catalogue of big misses that he’s accrued whilst at Tottenham.

The worst of these came last week against Dnipro FC, when he scooped over from five yards out, with the net at his mercy.

This has The Mirror claiming that Soldado’s ‘nightmare spell’ with Spurs could be over when the summer arrives. The source suggests that the Tottenham top brass are keen to send him packing and that they have already identified Atletico Madrid’s hotshot striker, Diego Costa, as a potential replacement.

I have to say, if Daniel Levy and co. pull this one off, it will represent one hell of an upgrade. That’s like taking a Fiat Panda to the garage and rolling out with a brand new Ferrari.

Costa has played a pivotal role for Madrid this season, scoring 27 goals and firing them up the La Liga table. It’s easy to see why Tottenham might be interested. But then again, it’s easy to see why any club would be interested.

Suffice to say, there will be plenty of clubs in the running to sign Costa. What’s more, he’s going to command one hell of a price-tag. With Spurs unlikely to recoup the £26m they spent on Soldado if they sell him, they’re going to have to put their money where their mouth is once more.

Fingers crossed they’re willing to do exactly that.

What’s your take? Is it time to send Roberto Soldado packing? Can Spurs compete for Diego Costa?
