Edinson CavaniHow much good will does spending £37.1m on a talented play-maker buy you? Manchester United boss, David Moyes has just discovered that plaudits can’t be bought, they have to be earned on the football pitch.

Don’t get me wrong. Signing Juan Mata from Chelsea, one of Manchester United’s biggest rivals, still strikes me as a masterstroke. But unless David Moyes sets his team up properly, motivates the troops and instills a positive outlook in his players, this United side are going to continue to coast into oblivion.

Whilst I’m not a big fan of the likes of Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa or Marouane Fellaini (a Moyes signing), I have little doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson would have been able to coax top drawer performances out of them. Fergie did have a habit of transforming good players into great players through sheer force of will.

David Moyes doesn’t seem to have this ability, not yet any way. As such, it’s going to take time for him to make his mark. And he may well have to rely on big signings like Juan Mata to make it happen. After all, he wont have to motivate players like Mata to be great. They already are.

This surely explains why Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie have continued to impress this season whilst others have struggled. These are players with natural talent and a proven track record.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Manchester United are keen to sign PSG’s gifted centre-forward, Edinson Cavani. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the European football scene for the last two-or-three years, this is a name you’ll have heard plenty of times.

Cavani is nothing if not prolific. Whilst at Napoli he scored 104 goals in 138 games. Since moving to PSG in the summer he has scored 20 times in 29 games. This man has proven himself again and again.

With Wayne Rooney’s future shrouded by a sea of question marks, this is exactly the kind of player that Manchester United need to be looking at.

But he did cost the Paris based side £50m and they have no real pressing need to sell. Whilst I’m delighted to see the Red Devils get linked to Cavani, I’ll temper my excitement with a healthy dose of realism.

Things change quickly in football. If David Moyes can make a deal happen for this talented Uruguayan, then all of the blunders he’s committed since moving to Old Trafford will be forgiven.

Until he sets up his team for another disappointing 2-1 defeat against a workman like Premier League side, that is.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United make a deal happen for Edinson Cavani?
