Georginio WijnaldumSmart signings have been a fixture of Brendan Rodger’s time at Liverpool, so fans will certainly be hoping that he continues the trend during the January transfer window.

Whilst there are those who consider the Reds to be title contenders, I think it’s important to keep expectations in check. Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent season thus far and are definitely in the running for a Champions League space. Achieving this goal would certainly represent a successful season in charge for Rodgers and co.

But to make this happen could require additional investment in the January transfer window. In particular, I can’t help but hope that Brendan takes a look at his midfield.

In Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool have arguably the best forward line in the Premier League. The Uruguayan in particular is a sensational striker, who’s capable of carrying the team when other players aren’t performing.

Unfortunately, the midfield isn’t quite as impressive. With Steven Gerrard starting to slow down and be less effective and Philippe Coutinho still looking a little raw, bringing in somebody who could help provide service to Sturridge and Suarez  would be a good move.

According to The Metro, Liverpool have made PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum a January target. I’m not quite sure how you pronounce his name, but the man certainly has an impressive CV.

Wijnaldum is a product of the Feyenoord youth team, with whom he played 130 matches between 2007-2011. This led to a 5m euro move to PSV, where he’s quickly managed to establish himself as  vital part of their team. Following on from Mark van Bommel’s retirement and the exit of Kevin Strootman, Georgino Wijnaldum was named PSV captain.

It’s thought that Arsenal were interested in Wijnaldum over the summer, but couldn’t agree terms with PSV. If Liverpool were to offer £9m for the 23-year-old, however, they may just get their man. At this kind of price, Rodgers wouldn’t exactly be making a massive gamble. He’d be signing somebody who has proven to be effective at his two previous clubs and looks like he’d be a good fit in the Premier League.

He’d add a little more bite for the Reds midfield and provide competition for the likes of Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson. So here’s hoping that Rodgers pulls off yet another transfer masterstroke. I’ll certainly have my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool make a move for Georginio Wijaldum?
