Ezequiel-GarayIt’s beginning to look like Manchester United are in real trouble. Yes, they started badly, picking up the odd bad result and putting in the occasional poor performance, but that’s nothing compared to the situation they’re currently in. After a decent enough December, Manchester United have found the new year to be troubling territory.

The debacle against Sunderland was yet another defeat in a chain of defeats. I’m sure the result had Manchester United fans scratching their heads and wondering when all the madness was going to come to an end.

All the good will that David Moyes had when he was first installed as Manchester United coach has faded away. Whilst he did a good job at Everton, that will be all but forgotten if he fails to turn things around at Old Trafford. Overseeing the death of a great club just doesn’t look great on a CV.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an easy way out for Moyes. He’s inherited a squad that’s too old in some areas and too raw and inexperienced in others. Injuries to his strikers have created a real headache this season and a complete lack of activity in his midfield hasn’t helped the situation.

But it’s his defence that I want to focus on in this article. Rio Ferdinand recently picked up another (short-term) injury and Nemanja Vidic’s future is uncertain. Both are getting on in years, have a history of injury problems and seem to be approaching the autumn of their careers.

It would be a mistake to think that they can both be relied upon until the end of the season. Unless David Moyes signs somebody this January, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.

That’s where Ezequiel Garay, Benfica’s talented defender, could step into the picture. In recent times, we’ve heard a lot about the Argentine, particularly in conjunction with a potential move to Old Trafford. As it happens, The Mirror recently suggested that Manchester United are still interested and that Garay himself would ‘welcome the opportunity of a challenge in a new country’.

At 27-years-old, Garay has the right mix of experience and fitness levels. The former Real Madrid man should be just about hitting his peak at this stage. He’s certainly impressed in Portugal and could be a fantastic option for Manchester United.

Given David Moyes’ current defensive conundrum, signing somebody as good as Garay makes good sense. Sure, he’d have a huge price-tag, but isn’t it time for the club to take a meaningful step to steady the ship?

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils make a move for this Benfica ace?
