Should Manchester United be in the running for this £37m ace?

Julian DraxlerTypical isn’t it. Just as Manchester United lose their stranglehold over the Premier League, Arsene Wenger discovers a willingness to start spending big.

Whilst Arsene Wenger was often able to give Sir Alex Ferguson a run for his money, the fight between the Frenchman and David Moyes hasn’t even been close. Wenger is the master of the smart transfer, whereas the new Manchester United head coach hasn’t quite got the experience that’s needed at the top level.

That’s surely why Moyes failed to sign players like Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas in the summer, whilst the Gunners got their hands on Mesut Ozil, one of the best midfielders in the world.

With United’s midfield struggling to find any creative impetus, Ozil could have been just the ticket. I’d argue that he should have been the player that United spent all their time pursuing during the last transfer window.

Admittedly, the German has yet to really sparkle in the Premier League, but he has granted the Gunners the belief they need to clamber back to the top of the Premier League table. In that sense, he’s been an excellent signing.

With all this in mind, I’m somewhat disappointed to see that Arsenal have yet again been linked to another highly-regarded German midfielder. This time the man (or boy), in question is Julian Draxler who has been making some serious waves over in the Bundesliga.

With United’s current needs, I’m surprised that it’s Arsenal who are getting linked to this player and not the Red Devils. He has the creative cut-and-thrust and the confidence in front of goal that Manchester United really need at this moment in time. He’s got the perfect profile for the club in its current state.

He may be young, but there’s no doubting his talent. He’s good enough that he could walk straight into this Manchester United team and start making a real difference. The thought of him playing alongside Adnan Januzaj is mouth-watering.

The Mirror claims that United have sent scouts to watch Draxler in action, but it’s not clear whether Moyes will be willing to trigger the youngster’s £37m release cause. That’s a lot of money, no doubt, but don’t United need a player of this calibre to slap them from their slumber?

I just hope Arsene Wenger doesn’t get another one over on Manchester United.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United challenge Arsenal for Julian Draxler’s signature?
