Edinson CavaniIt’s difficult to know where to stand on the Wayne Rooney situation. With different sources making different claims, it really is anybody’s guess as to what the future holds for the England international. The 28-year-old’s United contract is set to expire next summer and as of yet, there’s little evidence to suggest that he’ll agree new terms with his current paymasters.

There’s no doubting that his exit would be a major set-back for the club. Manchester United are already struggling at the moment and I dread to think what could happen to the club were they to lose their talismanic striker.

But with The Mirror claiming that Rooney is waiting to see whether Manchester United improve this season, it makes sense for the club to start drawing up a list of replacements. After all, David Moyes doesn’t want to be caught with his pants down here. Wayne Rooney’s exit is foreseeable, so the club has to be ready if the worst happens.

The same article suggests that David Moyes views PSG’s superstar striker, Edinson Cavani as the perfect replacement for Wayne Rooney. I can’t help but agree with him.

Cavani is two years younger than Rooney and shares many of the England international’s qualities. They’re both physically tough, the both work hard and they’re both genuine forces in front of goal.

Since joining PSG, Cavani has scored 18 goals in 26 games. That’s impressive, but so too is his tally for Napoli, where he scored 104 goals in 138 games. The man is a natural finisher and he’s not afraid to take pot-shots in any area of the pitch.

He’s the kind of player who would make Wayne Rooney’s absence less strongly felt. He’s certainly good enough to set Manchester United back on the path towards success.

He moved to Ligue 1 in the summer as part of a £53m deal. Now, The Mirror suggests that he’s already growing tired of French football and could be game for a move away from his new club. The source suggets that it would take £55m to persuade PSG to sell. That’s a figure that would absolutely smash Manchester United’s current transfer record.

But wouldn’t it be the best thing for the club at this moment in time? A marquee signing of this nature would win back the fans, get the players believing again and start raising performance levels. It’s a major investment, but surely it’d be worth it?

What’s your take? Can Manchester United afford to compete for this £55m talent?
