Should Arsenal snap up this gifted former Spurs star?

Dimitar BerbatovIt was only ever going to be a matter of time before these kind of rumours started to pop up. According to The Mirror, Arsenal are hot on the trail of Fulham’s gifted Bulgarian, Dimitar Berbatov.

Forget the man’s links to Tottenham. Berbatov has a stronger affiliation to Manchester United than he does to Arsenal’s North London rivals. Besides, I’m not sure that Berba feels any particular loyalty to Spurs. If the Gunners’ interest is genuine, there could be scope for a deal here.

As things currently stand, Arsenal and Fulham are world’s apart. At the time of writing, the Gunners are at the top of the Premier League table. Unfortunately for the Cottagers, they’ve struggled this year and are lingering just above the drop zone.

I can’t help but feel that a man like Dimitar Berbatov would be irked by these circumstances. He’s used to challenging for silverware and competing at the top of the table. And given his talent and ability levels, that’s the place he ought to be.

But he (and his agent) made a decision to move to Fulham. It was up to him to make the most out of it, help out his new club and potentially put himself in the shop window. Instead, he’s been his usual nonchalant self and has never really felt a need to break a sweat at Craven Cottage.

Still, despite his attitude, he’s still managed to contribute 5 goals this season. Perhaps that’s why clubs remain interested in him?

It strikes me that Dimitar Berbatov is the Premier League equivalent of a fixer-upper boyfriend. The belief remains that with the right level of motivation and opportunity for reward, Berba can turn around his career and still produce the goods for a top club. Whilst this possibility shouldn’t be ruled out, it’s definitely a gamble.

I can see why Arsenal might be interested. They currently have no fit strikers and desperately need to bring somebody in to help share the workload. But is Dimitar Berbatov the right man for the job? I don’t think so.

The Gunners already have one unmotivated, lacklustre striker (Nicklas Bendtner). It would be a mistake to bring in somebody else who isn’t pulling the club in the right direction.

He may be a cheap, affordable option, but that doesn’t make him the right one.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners move in for Dimitar Berbatov?

    Berbatov. Gifted?

Arsenal wouldn’t employ Berbatov as a Ground Caretaker.

Arsenali, you either really hate your team, or you actually follow Cricket. Berbatov is no enemy of ANY team he’s played for. Teams have been dying to get rid of him, getting passed around the Premier League like an adopted kid with behavioural problems.

And I’m not even Arsenal fan. Disappointed in this site’s speculative skills. I’m leaving this website. And no. don’t wait up.
