Despite many critics claiming that he is out of his depth at Old Trafford, David Moyes has been highly ambitious in the transfer market.
Sure, the transition from Everton to Manchester United hasn’t gone particularly smoothly. The performances his side have trotted out have been well under-par and they’ve struggled against some pretty lacklustre opposition.
But should David Moyes continue to show ambition in the transfer market, it’s only a matter of time before the club are put back on the right track.
Whilst fans didn’t exactly applaud the signing of Marouane Fellaini, he’s an extremely highly rated midfielder, who can play pretty much any where on the pitch and be a game winner on his day in any of these positions.
Then there’s Moyes, most recent recruit, Juan Mata. Whilst Jose Mourinho may not be a fan of the Spaniard, he remains one of the best footballers in the Premier League. The former Chelsea star moves the ball extremely quickly and accurately, can open up defences and provide a goal-threat of his own.
Safe to say he’s going to be a real asset for David Moyes.
Let’s not forget that the former Everton man has also targeted big name footballers like Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara. There we are again: ambition. No half measures.
If you believe the stories in the papers, he hasn’t lost his appetite yet. The Metro recently ran a story suggesting that Manchester United are currently chasing two big name players. The two individuals in question? Toni Kroos and Marco Reus.
The source suggests that Moyes was in the stands watching Kroos during a recent Bayern Munich game against Borussia Monchengladbach. The 24-year-old’s contract only ties him down to the Bundesliga side for a further 18 months.
In a year and half’s time he’ll be available on a free transfer, should he fail to agree a new deal with his current club. It’s not like Bayern are short of options in this department either. If United are serious about signing Kroos, the opportunity could well be there.
But Marco Reus would be an even more exciting addition to this ever-improving Manchester United side. At just 24-years-old, Reus has already established himself as one of the best wingers in world football.
Neither player would come cheap, but both would help to flesh out Manchester United’s squad in a meaningful way. They are the type of world-class talent that could well propel the club back up to the top of the Premier League table.
Having already spent big this January, these deals don’t look particularly likely, but that won’t stop me from crossing my fingers.
What’s your take? Can Manchester United really compete for these big name footballers?
