Should Spurs consider selling this recent big-money addition?

Erik LamelaThings may not be going particularly well for Spurs at the moment, but there have been some signs of recovery over the course of the last week.

For a start, they’ve officially brought on Tim Sherwood as head coach. Whilst he may not share Andre Villas-Boas’ tactical acumen, he’s already made a series of smart decisions whilst in charge at White Hart Lane (bringing back Emmanuel Adebayor not the least among them). I’d also vouch that he’s a better motivator of men than the Portuguese.

The team also squeezed out an important 3-2 victory over Southampton last weekend. They refused to let the Saints peg them back and the result could turn around their season.

But with the January transfer window almost upon, it’ll be interesting to see how Tim Sherwood reacts. Will he be given a budget? Will any of the players that Villas-Boas brought in be put out to pasture?

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what happens to Erik Lamela over the rest of this season. The club made a £30m investment in him during the summer and he’s been unable to provide good footballing value for his price-tag. Like Willian over at Chelsea, these two big-money signings seem to be buckling under the weight of pressure.

The Argentine winger was scoring goals for fun whilst at Roma, but since moving to the Premier League, his powers seem to have waned. He’s yet to find the back of the net and in general has struggled to provide any threat. Yes, he works hard and isn’t afraid to put in a tackle, but that’s not the reason why he was signed.

This has sparked rumours that he could already be on his way out at White Hart Lane. The Mirror claim that Juventus want to bring Lamela back to Serie A and Napoli are thought to be interested in a loan deal.

Whilst I understand the concerns about his output so far, it’s too soon to start rolling out these kind of stories.

It’s somewhat ridiculous that his Tottenham future is already under threat. All new signings deserve 6-12 months to try and settle in at their new clubs. This is all the more true if they’ve arrived from a different League. Lamela is still young and is only going to get better as the months roll by. What he achieved in Serie A wasn’t a fluke. Give him time and he could replicate it in the Premier League.

Let’s not send him on his way just yet.

What’s your take? Are Spurs right to start considering the future of Erik Lamela?

I remember Bale looking like a donkey for a long time so why all the panic over someone who has already proved he has talent? You don’t become a bad player overnight
