Adam LallanaI was wondering how long it would be before stories of this kind started to worm their way into the rumourmill. According to The Star, Manchester United are interested in signing Southampton’s talented midfielder, Adam Lallana.

Given the young lad’s performances this season, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before he started getting linked to big clubs. It’s probably only taken this long because the England international has such a strong affinity with his current club.

Yes, I realise that Manchester United and Southampton aren’t too far off each other in the Premier League table at the moment, but The Red Devils have far more pedigree and far more potential for silverware over the coming years. In other words, Manchester United could still hold some appeal for a player who has (thus far), been a one club man.

The St Albans born winger/attacking midfielder has made 214 appearances for the Saints, finding the back of the net 43 times. He’s been at the club for 13 years (since he was 12-years-old!). He was instrumental in guiding Southampton back up into the Premier League table and has remained the club’s guiding force this season.

He was particularly impressive during a recent game against Tottenham, where he scored one and set up another for Rickie Lambert. Yes, the Saints lost that game, but Lallana did everything he could to prevent that from happening.

I’m not surprised that Manchester United are interested. Adam Lallana is exactly the kind of player that they lack at this moment in time. How they could have used a player with his level of technical ability, imagination and threat throughout the earlier parts of this season.

The Star suggest that the 25-year-old could be available for as little as £15m. I have to say, I find this difficult to believe. He’s one of the Saint’s most important players and they’ll be keen to keep hold of him for a little longer. It’s also worth bearing in mind that his current contract runs until 2018. The Saints are in a real position of power here.

But if Manchester United pursue him strongly and put in a bid that represents a fair evaluation of the player, then who knows? David Moyes spent a lot of money on Marouane Fellaini. Maybe he’ll repeat the feat when it comes to Adam Lallana?

What’s your take? Should Manchester United really try to sign Adam Lallana, or should they pursue other targets?
