Ola JohnThere’s a perception among Liverpool fans, that if their side only had one or two more world-class midfielders, they would be genuine title contenders this season.

Yes, the Reds have the Premier League’s best strike-force. Daniel Sturridge is in unstoppable goal-scoring form and there just aren’t enough superlatives to describe exactly how good Luis Suarez is. But even this dynamic duo can’t compensate for a lack of cut-and-thrust in the centre-of-the-park.

Too often already this season the Reds have come undone thanks to poor passing, slow thinking or slack play emanating from the midfield. Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool legend. He’s one of the best players to have ever thrown on a Liverpool kit. But he’s not getting any younger and his Hollywood balls are becoming less and less effective.

Jordan Henderson has improved immeasurably this season, but he still doesn’t look like he’s ready for the big time.

Add to this Philippe Coutinho’s injury problems and it’s easy to see why the Reds are struggling.

What’s more, they’re no longer particularly effective down the flanks. Yes, they got rid Stewart Downing, but they haven’t managed to improve on him over the summer. I think it’s fair to say that the contributions of Victor Moses, Raheem Sterling and Luis Alberto have been below par.

Something has to give. Brendan Rodgers needs to extend his hand out into the transfer window and snap somebody up.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool are on the trail out of favour Benfica winger, Ola John.

The former FC Twente star may have a Dutch international cap, but he’s struggling to make his mark in Portugal. He’s made two League appearances for Jorge Jesus’ side this season and there are whispers suggesting that he’s becoming antsy.

At 21-years-old, John still has a lot of developing to do. But if he’s to reach his full potential he’ll need more game time. Liverpool could offer him this.

In 2012 he cost Benfica £10m. Given his recent form, I’m sure the Portuguese side would be willing to take a small hit when it comes to selling him.

A change of scenery could do the talented winger good. If Ola John were to re-find his feet with Liverpool, the Reds would certainly be onto a winner. The Dutchman has real class. If he reaches his full potential, he’ll be a world beater.

So it’s safe to say that I have my fingers crossed for this one.

What’s your take? Should the Reds be looking at Ola John?
