Why fans shouldn’t make a big deal out of Robin Van Persie’s situation:

VAN PERSIE AGAINST ARSENALIt’s a tough time to be a Manchester United fan. This is a fan-base that is accustomed to great performances, tactical dominance, smart dealings in the transfer market and regular victories on the pitch. Unfortunately, none of this seems to be happening at the moment. David Moyes appears to be failing at every thing he turns his hands to.

This is the closest thing to a ‘crisis’ that Manchester United have suffered for quite some time. David Moyes needs to worm his way out of the situation pretty quick. The Red Devils need a fast turn-around. Failure to earn a top four slot this January would be catastrophic for the club.

It certainly doesn’t help that spurious rumours are being spread about one of their leading men. If you believe pundit Mark Lawrenson, Robin Van Persie wants out of the club. Check out these quotes from the former Liverpool defender:

“There’s all sorts of rumours coming out of the training ground at the moment. One or two of the press boys that I know that cover Manchester United, they’re even saying that the big whisper is Van Persie might have asked for a transfer on Tuesday. So if that happens, what a mess that’s going to be for David Moyes.” (Source: The Mirror)

It’s hard to understand why Lawro might say something like this. Considering United’s current wounded animal status, it’s something of a low blow. Until we’ve heard from Moyes, or Van Persie himself, however, I’m not going to get too worked up. This is the kind of nonsense that gets trumped up when your club’s not doing particularly well.

Besides, Robin Van Persie’s recent celebration against Arsenal wasn’t the celebration of a man who doesn’t give a damn about his current club.

What Manchester United need at the moment is unity. There’s very little that’s remarkable about this United side (barring RVP and Wayne Rooney), but if they work hard, get the basics right and start putting in some team performances, they’ll start to steady the ship. Sir Alex stood watch over a number of unremarkable players, but still managed to squeeze top drawer performances out of them.

It’s up to David Moyes to do the same. After that it’s up to him to convince players like Robin Van Persie that United can still compete for trophies. The best way to do that is to spend big in the transfer market.

I’m sure RVP is looking at his former club, Arsenal, with some degree of lust. But there’s no way he could ever return back to the Emirates. He well and truly severed those ties. Instead, he’s tied his mast to Manchester United’s ship. Let’s just hope that it’s smooth sailing from here on out.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United fans be concerned about Robin Van Persie?
