TIF Article 8 - ArsenalWhilst the Gunners have suffered some disappointing results in recent times (losing to Manchester United, drawing with Everton when they were five minutes away from winning and losing to Napoli), I think it’s fair to say that they’re still riding a wave of good feeling.

They’ve just signed Mesut Ozil, one of the best midfielders in the world (who’s barely shown his potential yet), they’re at the top of the Premier League table and they’ve finally got strength in depth throughout the squad (except in the centre-forward position).

They’ve also qualified for the next round of the Champions League. Yes, they’ll have to play against tough opposition in the first stage of the knockout rounds, but they have players capable of rising to the challenge.

Who knows, if the Gunners hold their nerve, they could well pick up their first piece of silverware in eight years.

But Arsenal do have other concerns to deal with. Like tying down the man who is driving all this success with a new deal.

Arsene Wenger’s contract with the club is up in January, but According to The Mirror, Arsenal are ready to ‘step up their attempts’ at getting the Frenchman to agree a new deal. It’s also claimed that the Arsenal hierarchy are ‘confident he will sign in the next few weeks’.

If this is true, it’s great news. Whilst a ‘Wenger out’ crowd has formed over the last two or three years, they’ve been suspiciously quiet this season.

Having just spent £42.4 on Mesut Ozil, I doubt Arsene Wenger will want to up and leave. He’s had to be financially prudent and somewhat tight-fisted for so long, that it would a genuine shame if he weren’t the one to reap the rewards.

Arsenal are a financial powerhouse who are capable of competing for top players. Arsene is the kind of man who attracts, nurtures and improves top players. As Manchester United fans have found out, David Moyes isn’t.

And now that we’ve reach a stage where the footballing world has gone money-mad, this distinction could make all the difference. By doing all it can to keep Arsene Wenger at the club, Arsenal could well usher in a new period of success.

I’ve certainly got my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal offer Arsene Wenger a new deal? Is the Frenchman ready for a new challenge?
