Should Arsenal try and compete for this Real Madrid legend?

Iker CasillasWojciech Szczesny has come a long way this season. Last year, he was prone to committing costly errors and inexplicable gaffs. He gave away a few penalties, constantly rushed out of his area (when he shouldn’t) and distributed the ball extremely poorly. Keeping count of the number of times he kicked the ball out of play would have been a fool’s errand.

Sure, he had his moments, but all in all, it was a year to forget.

It all culminated in him losing his place in the first team and some serious questions surrounding his mentality. The self-confidence that had been ever present since his arrival at the Emirates seemed to have evaporated away.

But somehow he’s managed to pull it all back together. Through a combination of hard-work and good coaching, Szczesny is currently enjoying the best form of his career. We all knew that he was an excellent shot-stopper and he’s had to prove his on numerous occasions already this year.

With all this pre-amble in mind, it may seem a little odd for me to then go on to claim that Arsenal should sign another keeper. But it’s worth taking a look at just who this individual is and what he could do for both this Arsenal team and for Wojciech Szczesny.

The keeper I’m referring too is Real Madrid superstar, Iker Casillas, who The Mirror claim is currently being offered to Premier League clubs ready for a January move.

The 32-year-old is no longer an automatic starter at the Bernabeu and may fancy a change of scenery. With the World Cup fast approaching, I’m sure he’d be keen to cement his position as Spain’s number one.

Szczesny is still learning, but Casillas is the finished product. Whilst his luck has changed over the last year or so, he’s still regarded as one of the best keepers in world football. Signing him would only solidify an already impressive Arsenal defence (I think the 6-3 Man City thrashing was an anomaly).

Besides, Szczesny could use a mentor. I doubt that this will be the last rough patch he’ll go through. Who better to learn from than Iker Casillas?

As The Mirror notes, a deal for the Spaniard ‘would seem unlikely’, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if it were to go ahead.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal use another keeper? Should they consider signing Iker Casillas?
