He’s willing to take a big pay-cut, but should Manchester United move in for him?

Wesley SneijderWith the January transfer window fast approaching, you have to feel that Manchester United will be one of the clubs who loosen up their purse strings.

More than any other team in the Premier League (barring Spurs), Manchester United are in desperate need of a fresh start. David Moyes’ arrival at Old Trafford has brought with it nothing but difficulties.

He’s made poor decisions in the transfer market, has failed to motivate the troops and doesn’t seem to be able to tactically outwit any of his Premier League managerial rivals.

I can’t help but feel that it’s time to turn to experience. Manchester United’s midfield is in dire need of a creativity boost and somebody like Wesley Sneijder could be just the ticket. According to The Mirror, The Red Devils are leading the charge to sign the Dutch International.

He’s thought to have a £10m price-tag, which is something of a bargain considering his reputation. Yes, he’s now 29-years-old, but when you consider how much money was spent on Marouane Fellaini…

What’s more, it’s thought that Sneijder is willing to take a 25% pay-cut in order to make a deal happen. That’s a pretty big step forward towards maturity, for a player who has been saddled with the ‘mercenary’ label throughout his career.

He’s currently getting paid £4m a year to play for Galatasaray. If United are willing to shell out £3m a year (on top of his transfer fee), they could well get their man.

We know what Sneijder would offer this United side. With Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Marouane Fellaini struggling to offer any creativity, Sneijder will be the perfect tonic.

He remains one of the best passers in the game, he’s got considerable technical ability and he’s difficult to dispossess. He’s also never been a player who relies too much on his pace. As such, I can’t see his age being too much of a problem and I’m sure he’s got a few more good years left in him. Yes, he’s almost 30, but he’s still one of Holland’s (and Galatasaray’s) best players.

Offering to accept a £1m pay-cut is a pretty big ‘come get me’ plea. I can only hope that David Moyes and co. heed his call.

What’s your take? Is Wesley Sneijder the perfect solution for this struggling Manchester United side? Should David Moyes be weighing up other options?
