Ross BarkleyA comprehensive win against a lacklustre Aston Villa side and a solid 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League could well be the catalyst that sparks Manchester United’s turnaround this season.

There were fears that United would continue to struggle without their lead striker, Robin Van Persie. Fortunately, these worries were assuaged by Danny Welbeck, who grabbed a brace against Villa. Let’s hope he’s ready to step up and continue to contribute as this season grows older.

Of course, he’ll need some help. Welbeck isn’t the only player to have disappointed over the last 12 months. The entire Manchester United midfield needs to step up, work harder and start providing better service into their strikers.

That’s been at the heart of all of United’s issues this year. The midfield moves the ball about too slowly, isolates the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, gives it away and heaps pressure on a solid, but aging defense. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Here’s hoping that David Moyes is given a budget to go after a world-class midfielder this January. It could be the difference between Manchester United continuing to fade away, or earning a Champions League slot next year.

But who should they bring in? Whilst I was disappointed to see David Moyes go in for one of his former Everton charges, Marouane Fellaini, I hope he opts to dip back  into his old club one more time. Whilst it’s not exactly a classy act, when there’s talent like Ross Barkley available, it’s hard to steer clear.

According to the Daily Star, both Manchester United and Man City are in the running to sign the gifted midfielder. It’s also claimed that Everton are about to offer the 20-year-old a big pay-rise and a contract extension. With so much interest in the youngster, it’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Anybody who saw his performance against Arsenal will testify: this boy is ready for a move to a top club. He’s so dynamic, physical and crafty. He keeps the ball well, isn’t afraid to run at people and can dip into a bag of tricks if necessary.

When he adds a bit more end product to his game, he’ll be ready for the big time. As things currently stand he’s not far off.

So the time seems right for Manchester United to move in. They’ll have to break the bank to sign him, but it may just be worth it.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United afford to compete for Ross Barkley?
