Ilkay GundoganWhilst tales of Manchester United’s decline have been greatly exaggerated, it’s not like the squad isn’t without it’s problems. The only real difficulty for United is that everybody knows the club’s current weaknesses. Everybody knows that they need to sign another world-class midfielder.

David Moyes’ arrival at Old Trafford triggered a considerable set-back that Manchester United are still clawing their way back from. The Red Devils started the season slow, but things have begun to pick up as the year has progressed. I fully expect Manchester United to be back to their best by the time January swings by.

By that stage, I’m hoping key players like Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Michael Carrick will be performing consistently. I’m also hoping that Shinji Kagawa will be shifted into the middle and given a proper run of games.

If that happens, things will get better for Manchester United. But what’s really going to help this club is David Moyes making some smart decisions in the transfer market. He deliberated too much in the summer and needs to right some wrongs in the January window.

In particular, he needs to add a little more balance to Manchester United’s midfield. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan.

Stories recently surfaced suggesting that the German international had already agreed terms with Real Madrid. The player’s father, Irfan Gundogan has been quick to quash the rumours:

“There is no agreement between Gundogan and Real Madrid. We only put contract negotiations with Dortmund on hold because we did not want to disturb him during his injury.”

This means it’s still game on for Manchester United. Gundogan is a tidy player, who passes the ball crisply, can find gaps between defenses and make things happen. He’s also got bags of energy, a strong tackle and a great attitude. He’s widely regarded throughout Europe and would be a great addition for the Red Devils.

It’s thought that with his contract situation being what it is, he could be available for just £25m. That’s still a lot of money, but he’d certainly be worth it. Let’s hope that David Moyes has the chutzpah to pull this one off.

What’s your take? Should David Moyes move in for Ilkay Gundogan?
