Javier HernandezArsenal have one of the best squads in the Premier League, but it’s also a squad with a clear weakness: it’s extremely light upfront. Beyond Olivier Giroud, the Gunners are very light on options.

That’s why I was so interested to see the club pick up a link to Manchester United striker, Javier Hernandez. This came as former United coach, Rene Meulensteen spoke to the Press about the player’s future. Check out these quotes:

“If Hernandez comes to an age where he thinks he wants regular football and he can get into another top team in the Premier League then I can see him considering [leaving]. With Hernandez, having Robin van Persie in that position mean sometimes you will fall short. That’s why it’s so important that, at the right time, you mix up the combinations and that all these players feel like they contribute to the competitions that you play in.”

The Mirror followed-up by suggesting that he’s now a target for Arsenal.

It’s always struck me that Javier Hernandez would be a good fit for Arsenal. He is, after all, a player that impresses because his movement is so fantastic and because he reads the actions of the midfield so well.

Arsenal have some of the best midfielders in the world in their squad. If they were providing service to some one with pace, mobility and finishing ability, I’m sure they’d be even more effective. Javier Hernandez could well be that man.

He’d also provide a welcome counter-balance to Olivier Giroud. Don’t get me wrong, the Frenchman has been a revelation this season. His strength, aerial dominance and technique have been a joy to behold. But his lack of pace will always hold him back.

Arsenal need a striker who can provide them with this option going forward. Somebody who can run in behind and take advantage of the ball over the top.

Javier Hernandez certainly deserves a shot at a top club that is willing to give him regular game time. The way he’s been underused at Old Trafford verges on criminal. Despite continually impressing and scoring regularly, he’s spent a significant amount of his Manchester United career on the sub’s bench.

Given how light Arsenal are upfront, this wouldn’t be the case at the Emirates. As such, it’d be a smart move for both Hernandez and the Gunners. Indeed, only Manchester United seem to be losing out here.

What’s your take? Could the Gunners really wrap up a deal for one of their rival’s top forwards?
