Arsenal may well have been a revelation this season, but there’s still some work to do in the January transfer window. If Arsene Wenger’s serious about winning some silverware this season, there may well be some spending to do yet.
Yes, he brought in Mesut Ozil over the summer and he cost the club £42.4m. He’s improved the squad significantly, but he can’t carry the load going forward. That’s Olivier Giroud’s job and he’s been pretty effective thus far this season.
Whilst he had a mixed bag of a first season at the Emirates, this year he’s been considerably more effective. He’s tough, difficult to dispossess and he’s smart too. Whilst he has no pace, he’s a typical Arsenal striker in the sense that he’s a neat player, has pretty good technical ability and can pull off all the flicks and tricks necessary to make Arsenal’s attacks effective.
But he’s also the reason why all Arsenal fans live in fear. If he gets injured, Arsenal’s season is effectively over. He is, after all, their only good striker.
That’s why it’s so important that Arsene Wenger spends the January transfer window looking for a striker. Not just any striker either – he’s needs to bring in somebody who is world class.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are hot on the chase of Karim Benzema. I can’t help but feel that this is the perfect fit.
Arsene Wenger knows French talent well and will have followed Benzema’s career with great interest. When he moved to Real Madrid, I’m sure he kicked himself. But Benzema’s Madrid career seems to be coming to an end and now there’s an opportunity to snap him up.
He’s technically gifted, knows how to find the back of the net and has a bit of fire to him to. He’s a tenacious talent, with a winning attitude. In other words, he’s the kind of player that Arsene Wenger just loves.
It’s thought that he could cost as much as £22m. That’s a lot of money, but given Benzema’s credentials and his reputation throughout world football, it could be worse. Arsenal have a desperate need and Benzema is world-class. This seems to be something of a no-brainer. It could well be the Gunners’ last step towards Premier League glory.
