Olympics Day -1 - FootballDespite being spoiled for choice at the moment, Arsene Wenger still keeps getting linked to midfielders. I guess this is fair, given his propensity for signing players he likes, rather than players he needs.

Arsene Wenger has always had a thing for crafty, technically gifted midfielders that are capable of splitting defences in an instant. That’s why he can currently rely on the likes of Tomas Rosicky, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Mikel Arteta. Heck, even their defensive midfielder, Mathieu Flamini can thread the ball about pretty nicely.

As such, it may not seem that Arsenal need to sign another midfielder. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Arsene Wenger surprised everybody this January and signed another creative type. After all, isn’t that exactly what he did with Mesut Ozil?

This brings me to the news that Arsenal are currently pursuing Lazio contract revel, Hernanes. The playmaker’s contract expires at the end of the season and he’d add something extra to the Gunners’ midfield: a bit of Brazilian flair.

He’s certainly a talented individual, who combines a good work ethic, with great passing ability and quick feet. He’s also pretty hand in front of goal, finding the back of the net 37 times in 132 appearances in a Lazio shirt.

There are rumours that both Tottenham (didn’t they just sign a similar player in Paulinho?) and PSG are interested. If Arsene Wenger is seriously interested, he’ll have to act quickly. That’s especially true given the way things are progressing on the contract front.

Check out these quotes from Lazio President Claudio Lotito: “We have a meeting regarding the contract of Hernanes pencilled in for the next few weeks. Am I hopeful? I’m used to dealing with facts. I don’t bandage up my head before breaking it.”

As such, it’s difficult to say whether Hernanes will remain a Lazio player when the end of the season arrives. If he does become a free agent, I certainly hope that Arsene Wenger moves in.

Whilst most of the Gunners’ transfer budget will need to be spent on a top striker, there’s still room to sign another midfielder on the cheap. Hernanes certainly fits the profile and would make a great addition to the squad (even with its current wealth of options). What’s not to like?

What’s your take? Do the Gunners really need Lazio star Hernanes?

Numbers count for a team fighting for title and there for ideas of bringing more playess is welcomed. Wenger should go for. It will bring depth a competition.
