Is it time to commit Nicklas Bendtner to Arsenal’s history books?

Nicklas BendtnerNicklas Bendtner was given yet another opportunity to save his career at the weekend and dropped the ball once again. In the dying minutes of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, Bacary Sagna fired in an inviting cross. Unfortunately, Bendtner was slow to react, failed to get a foot on the ball and the chance went begging. That wasn’t the only occasion such a thing has happened this season.

For somebody with such a bad attitude and a surplus of ability, Nicklas Bendtner has been given an inordinate number of opportunities throughout his career.

Heck, the man played a season with Juventus, following from a disappointing season out on loan with Sunderland. It’s difficult to understand why one of the top sides in Italian football were willing to offer him a chance. But it’s equally difficult to understand why the Gunners have stood by him for so long.

I’d say it was clear that Bendtner would never have a career with Arsenal about two years ago. His attitude stinks, he’s not a good finisher, his technique isn’t great and he’s got no pace. Given this, it’s difficult to see how their could ever be a major role for him at the Emirates.

But circumstances has conspired and he’s been thrust into the limelight once more. The Gunners are light on options going forward and Olivier Giroud needs the occasional break. As a result, Arsene Wenger has been forced to call upon Nicklas Bendtner numerous times this year.

Things could have been so different. Had Arsenal managed to wrap up a deal for Chelsea’s Demba Ba over the summer, Nicklas Bendtner would have been sent packing. The Danish International recently spoke about his disappointment that he wasn’t allowed to move on:

“Everything was in place for me, there were three clubs that were just waiting for me to say ‘yes please’ to them. I was very disappointed when he [Wenger] phoned because I was ready to move on. I didn’t actually think that they wished to keep me.”

I think it’s fair to say that most Arsenal fans were disappointed too. Bendtner continued:

“At the moment I am an easy target for [some of the fans] because I want to leave the club and Arsenal don’t want to keep me.” (Source: The Star)

I’m glad he’s ready to move on and that Arsenal are still looking to sell him. Whilst I’m surprised anybody is interested in acquiring his services, he certainly has no future at the Emirates.

The best thing Arsene Wenger can do now, is sign a world-class striker and resign Nicklas’ Bendtner’s time at Arsenal to history.

What’s your take? Should Nicklas Bendtner leave Arsenal in order to save his career?
