Does Daniel Agger deserve a starting place at Liverpool?

Daniel AggerWhilst Liverpool have enjoyed a tip-top season thus far, it hasn’t been without it’s disappointments. Key among them, I’d say, are defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United and Daniel Agger’s loss of form and subsequently, his position in the team.

We all know just how good Daniel Agger is. He’s been one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs for a number of seasons. Players like Agger don’t suddenly lose their powers over night. This begs the question: what’s behind his lack of form?

At the start of the season Agger was very much in Liverpool’s first team plans. It looked like he and Brendan Rodgers were going to get along famously.

But since the loss to Southampton, Rodgers has chosen to place the faith elsewhere. As a result, Agger has had to sit out games against Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, West Brom and yes, Arsenal. I’m sure he’s just itching for more regular action.

Whilst he has turned in a few dodgy performances this season, there’s no member of Liverpool’s current defense who could claim otherwise. A cloud of defensive uncertainty seems to have affixed itself to the Reds’ defense. Just about everybody in that back-four looks shaky and less confident than last season.

It’s a good job Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are banging home the goals left, right and centre then, isn’t it?

Naturally, Agger feels like he deserves a role in Liverpool’s starting eleven. Speaking after the club’s 4-0 win over Fulham (which he was a part of), he said:

“I have been waiting for this chance and, as I have said before, you have to take it when you get it. I feel I have got the right to play, and of course I would have liked it to have come earlier. But in the end it is the coach who decides.” (Source: The Star)

For what it’s worth, I’d take Agger over Martin Skrtel any way. Not only is he Liverpool’s best centre-back, he’s also the club’s biggest proponent. He has ‘YNWA’ tattooed on his knuckles for goodness sake.

He’s also ignored interest from top clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City. He’s earned the right for an occasional slip-up (or two). Let’s hope he’s back in the first team for good.

What’s your take? Should Brendan Rodgers stand by Daniel Agger?

His name should be first on the team sheet.

You might mention he was out due to injury. He wasn’t simply dropped. The first three games he was injured and then the team was winning. You don’t generally change a winning side. Once they lost to Arsenal he got back in the team. Simples.

You are right cou, agger is good and with consistent play he will hit back his top form, not to mention that he knew there are competition for his place.
