Would this £17m signing be too good for Manchester United to miss?

KarimBenzemaAt the start of the season, Manchester United appeared to have one of the best forward line-ups in world football.

Things haven’t changed too much in this regard, but it’s fair to say that United’s forwards aren’t exactly in fine form at the moment.

Who would think that Manchester United would be struggling so badly, when they’ve got Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck on their roster? It just doesn’t seem possible.

Yet David Moyes arrival at the club seems to have sapped belief from the players and fans and things aren’t going particularly well at the moment. As things currently stand, Manchester United are ninth in the Premier League table, after seven games. Ninth!

It’s my feeling that David Moyes needs to shift things about and start leaving his own mark on the team. If that means selling a few and bringing in a few, then so be it.

Whilst United are strong upfront, I hope Moyes doesn’t neglect this area during the January transfer window.

Wayne Rooney has been Manchester United’s best player this season, but it’s not clear as to whether he really wants to be at the club and whether he’ll sign a new deal.

Robin Van Persie has had a few injury issues this year and has struggled to find his best form. He’s still one of the world’s best strikers, but at his age, his powers may soon begin to dwindle.

Then there’s Javier Hernandez, who doesn’t seem to have the trust of the manager and Danny Welbeck, who doesn’t seem to be a natural goalscorer.

Bringing in another option and adding some competition to the squad could well be a good move. And who could do that job better than Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema?

According to The Mirror, ‘David Moyes has been told [that] significant funds will be made available in January and may fancy Benzema’. What’s more, they even suggest that he could be available for as little as £17m.

Benzema is a technically gifted striker, who is always calm and composed in front of goal. His goal-scoring exploits for Real Madrid have been sensation and I find it hard to believe the Spanish club would be willing to let him go for this (relatively) meagre sum.

He’s currently not having the best of times at the Bernabeu and may fancy a change in scenery.

The stars seem to be aligning with this one. This kind of signing would pump belief back into the club and be a real symbol of intent from David Moyes. Let’s see if he can make it happen.

What’s your take? Would Karim Benzema be a good fit for Manchester United?

I think, Utd’s problem isn’t attack, rather a holding midfielder and of recent, a decent Center back.

  • Trevor says:

Moyes should save his money for two midfielders and two full backs and one winger.

  • adroit says:

all he needs to do is to sign 2 midfielders, a winger nd 2 centre-back

yes benzima will do somthing in manchester united so david moyes should bring him

  • ggmu says:

    what about herrera…draxlar….zouma….stegn……but selling young….anderson…..cleverly…..

  • David says:

I think it’s much more pressing we sigh a proper holding player like Gundogan or Khediera, a left footed attacking midfielder like Mata or Di Maria and a quality left back like Baines or Coentraeo.

A team of De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Baines, Carrick, Gundogan, Valencia, Rooney, Mata and Van Persie or maybe Khediera/Di Maria instead of Gundogan/ Mata looks very balanced.

Would agree that Benzema would be a good signing and give the attack something different, however the more pressing areas that need addressing (while getting Karim), would be 2 midfielders and a left winger, while also getting a lb and a cb…
I would be looking to do the following (and these players have had quite some time and so far the start of the season to impress!):
    Out:
Young, Anderson, Valencia, Cleverley, Buttner, Rio(can go at the end of the season!), Evra, (and possibly) Vidic = 35million (apx), Giggs.
    In:
    Sergi Roberto/Mats Daehli = 10mil, Lars Bender/Alex Witsel=20, Ilkay Gundagon/Joao Moutinho= 25-30, Baines/Coentrao = 15, Hummels/Mangala =20-30, Rodriguez/Quintero = 15-30
Not saying that all the players mentioned above will be bought, but thats what I feel needs to be added to the squad.
The ones that I have mentioned that are in the “out” tray yep…they need to go!
    Team wise:
    De Gea
    Raphael, Mangala, Evans, Baines.
    Carrick, Gundagon.
    Januzaj, Kagawa/Rooney
    Rooney/Kagawa
    RVP
Subs: Any of the above mentioned – not forgetting the loanees + Zaha (who should be given playing too!)

  • Miled says:

Buy a strong and creative mid fielder for God sake .

  • jimmymac62 says:

Rooney and Kagawa so good you picked them twice?

The overhaul will take 2 to 3 years at least, probably more like 5 or 6. The biggest problem will be attracting the top players to United. The elite few can name their price and go wherever they want,. London, Milan, Paris, Monaco, Barcalona, Madrid, Munich….those are the top cities with super rich/successful clubs for any foreign player to move to for an overall top quality of life experience for themselves and the families. United wont compete financially with Man City and United cant even guarentee ECL football now so Moyes will have to rely on youth and unearthing hidden talent like Wenger has done for so long. The only top class players United can hope to attract are those that are past their best or surplus to requirements elsewhere.
