Will Cesc Fabregas return to Arsenal one day?

Cesc-FabregasIt was fascinating to see Manchester United’s attempts to sign Cesc Fabregas over the summer. They were so delightfully misguided.

David Moyes is on the hunt for a creative midfielder and Fabregas is one of the best out there. At 26-years-old, he’s now at the peak of his game and would be a top asset for any club.

As such, I’m not surprised that Manchester United were interested in him. What’s surprising is that Moyes and co. were foolhardy enough to believe that Fabregas may be interested in moving to Manchester United.

The fact that United put in three bids for the Spaniard over the summer says it all. He’s valued by Barcelona and he doesn’t really want to leave the club.

And why would he? He’s at arguably the best club in the world and it just so happens to be his boyhood club. What’s more, he’s desperate to prove himself in La Liga.

Then there’s also the Arsenal connection. Cesc spent eight years with Arsenal before leaving in 2011. He was a club captain and will always be fondly remember by the fans.

His love for the Gunners seems to be genuine. I would have thought that it would have been strong enough to prevent him joining Manchester United, even if Barcelona didn’t want to keep him.

Just check out these recent quotes:

“Arsenal is in my heart and always will be. I don’t know if I’ll have the opportunity to go back and play there one day, or maybe after football. It’s a club that is always going to be there and will always open its doors to me. The club’s like a family so, even if it wasn’t as a coach, I’m sure they’d give me the chance to play a role.”

“Sol (Campbell) is there now. Arsenal help a lot with the formation of coaches. (Dennis) Bergkamp also went there two, three times a week when he was doing his coaching badges… There might be the chance to do something with them”. (Source: The Star)

It’s clear that he still feels a big connection to Arsenal. From his Twitter feed it’s clear that he’s still a fan and that he follows each game.

As for what the future holds, I’d love to see him back at the club once he’s achieved his aims with Barcelona. If he doesn’t return as a player, then coming back as a coach would also be a step in the right direction.

Whilst Arsenal have invited some top ex-players into the fold (like Campbell, Bergkamp, Bould and others), they’ve also managed to let others slip through their grasp (what’s Patrick Viera doing at Manchester City?).

I hope this doesn’t end up being the case with Cesc Fabregas. One way or another, I’d love to see him back at the Emirates.

What’s your take? Were Manchester United wrong to chase Cesc Fabregas? Will he return to Arsenal one day?
