Demba Ba

Football’s a cruel game. Demba Ba could have been playing regular football with Arsenal this season, who look like potential title-contenders this year. Instead, he’s stuck at Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho. He’s played just three games this season and is yet to score a goal.

That’s a pretty disappointing return, but it’s all the more disappointing given what could have been.

Ba was on the verge of moving to the Emirates this summer on a deadline day loan deal. Unfortunately, the move fell through as Jose Mourinho felt that having an additional striker could turn Arsenal into title contenders. If the current Premier League table is any evidence, I think it’s fair to say that Mourinho made the right decision.

I’m sure Ba won’t see things that way, however. He was kept at the club and hasn’t been given the opportunity to prove himself. He may feel that this is a little unfair. His quotes from earlier this season make this clear enough:

“I wanted to play – and I want to play. I was ready to go there [Arsenal] but it didn’t happen.” (Source: The Star)As luck would have it, Demba Ba may still get his move. Arsenal could move in again this January.

The bookmakers have placed Arsenal as 4/1 favourites to sign the Senegalese forward when the window re-opens. Newcastle are also interested and have been priced up at 5/1 to sign him.

But it’s Arsenal who have the most pressing need. If the Gunners are to mount a meaningful title challenge this season, they’ll need more firepower upfront.

Olivier Giroud has done well thus far, but if he stops scoring, the Gunners will have little other options to turn to. I’m just not sure Arsene Wenger can afford to give Nicklas Bendtner too much game time this season.

Demba Ba is an excellent, affordable option. He’s clearly surplus to requirements at Chelsea and Mourinho may consider selling if Arsenal come in with a better offer.

Whilst he has a similar playing style to Olivier Giroud (strong in the air, confident in front of goal), he’s also got a fair amount of pace and technique.

He’s considerably better than any other option Arsenal have available to them. In that sense it’s a bit of a no brainer. Let’s see if Arsene Wenger can make this deal happen this time round.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal attempt to sign Demba Ba again this January?
