It’s been interesting to watch Karim Benzema’s situation at Real Madrid develop over the last few months.

He’s gone from being one of the club’s most important players, to being someone who is seen as easily replaceable. His goal-scoring exploits over the last few years have been a thing to behold, but now it seems, they’ve all been forgotten.

Benzema’s reputation at Real Madrid is at an all time low. It’s not even that he’s been playing particularly badly. He’s just not been meeting the extremely high standards that Madrid fans set for their players and that his manager will be expecting from him.

Karim BenzemaThis season he has scored 4 goals in 10 games (and added an additional 3 assists), which doesn’t seem too shabby to me. But his build-up play has oftentimes been shabby, he’s careless in possession and he’s a little more sloppy than he used to be in front of goal.

A cynic may well suggest that all the speculation regarding his future during the summer transfer window has played havoc with his head. His attitude doesn’t appear to be quite right at the moment. As a result, the fans have been on his back this season, often booing him and making their distaste known.

Whilst he didn’t move on in the summer, it’s looking increasingly likely that he will this January. The Mirror even suggests that he could be available for as little as £17m.

I’m not really sure how they’ve managed to come up with that figure. It seems to have been plucked out of the thin air. After all, Real Madrid spent £25m on Benzema just four years ago and he’s certainly improved during this time.

But if he is available at this kind of price, then Arsenal have to move in for him. He clearly needs a change in scenery and Arsenal clearly need a striker. It seems like a match made in heaven.

Benzema has the technical ability, power and presence to make a major impact in this Arsenal squad. When he’s got his shooting boots on, he’s also one of the best finishers in Europe. His 91 goals in 193 appearances for Real Madrid certainly attest to that.

If Arsenal had both Olivier Giroud and Karim Benzema as forward options, they’d be a much more potent force. They could even be title challengers. So let’s see if Arsene Wenger could snap up yet another Real Madrid super star!

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Karim Benzema?
