Why are Manchester United making all this fuss about Sami Khedira?

Sami KhediraI really want David Moyes to make it at Old Trafford. I really do hope he does. But as things currently stand, I just can’t see it happening. There are just too many decisions he has made that I can neither countenance, nor understand. More so than any other Premier League manager, he has put my head in a spin.

Maybe this is all part of a master plan, one beyond our comprehension. There’s got to be a reason why he left signing Marouane Fellaini (a player the club really didn’t need) until the last moment, thus spending more on him than he would have done had he triggered his release clause earlier in the summer.

Unfortunately, some of the results Manchester United have been producing are inexcusable. The latest debacle was Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton. Again, this result was largely down to David Moyes’ dithering (in this case, some rather negative substitutions).

Naturally, most fans are holding out for the January transfer window, in the hope that David Moyes will pull some super signings out of the bag. But even in this regard, I have my concerns.

Why, for instance, has their been so much talk about Sami Khedira potentially making a move to Old Trafford?

According to CaughtOffside, United are ‘keen’ on Khedira, who isn’t particularly happy at Real Madrid. The German midfielder recently spoke to the Press about his position at the club:

“I’m not a Spanish player, I did not cost much money and I’m one of Mourinho’s disciples. I started the season on the bench or in the stands. Although if I play well, I am the scapegoat and will therefore not be properly assessed.”

I can see why Khedira may be unhappy. But there’s still no call for Manchester United to swoop in and provide him with an exit route. I really can’t see where rumours of United’s interest are coming from.

After all, Khedira is a defensive/holding midfielder. Given the already pointless signing of Marouane Fellaini, signing Khedira would be yet another step in the wrong direction. It would effectively be doubling down on a bad decision.

This is not to suggest that Khedira isn’t a good player. He’s probably better than Fellaini and is one of the best defensive minded footballers in the world. But he’s not right for Manchester United.

David Moyes should be spending his spare time hunting for a creative midfielder, who can give Manchester United more cut and thrust moving forward. If he chooses to waste time hunting Sami Khedira, it will only hurt the club further.

What’s your take? Do Manchester United really need Sami Khedira?
