The ideal replacement for Bacary Sagna at Arsenal?

Sime VrsaljkoOne of the highlights of this season (young as it may be) has been watching Bacary Sagna return to form and help Arsenal along their way to the top of the Premier League table.

After all, let’s face facts: Sagna was pants last season. His whiffy performances put Arsenal on the back-foot and his sluggish pace, rash tackling and lack of impetus made him look like a player who’d rather be elsewhere.

Of course, he had a ready-made excuse for these poor performances. He’d broken both his legs in recent seasons and these are the kind of injuries that take time to recover from.

Fortunately enough, the convalescence period seems to be over and ‘the Bac’ is back to his best. Before his first leg-break, Sagna was known by the fans as ‘Mr. Consistent’. There’s a chance that he’ll have re-earned this nickname by the end of the season.

But there’s also a good chance that Arsenal will have to wave goodbye to him at this stage. His contract with the North London side will be up this summer and he’ll be a free agent. As a result of his new-found form and affordability, I’m sure there’d be plenty of offers for his services.

Whilst I’m still hopeful that he’ll sign a new deal with Arsenal, I do hope that the club is drawing up a list of potential replacements.

With that in mind, it was pleasing to see The Mirror link Arsenal to Sime Vrsaljko. I can’t even begin to imagine how to pronounce his name, but it’s good to see Arsene Wenger planning ahead.

Vrsaljko is a 21-year-old full back and a fully-fledged Croatian international. He’s Genoa FC’s current right-back, but he can also play as a left-back and is a very versatile player. This is a quality that is sure to provide some allure to Arsene Wenger.

Despite his young-age, Vrsaljko is already highly-regarded and has attracted attention from clubs like Inter Milan. If he continues to improve at his current rate, he’s going to develop into a very exciting player indeed.

His signing would certainly keep Carl Jenkinson on his toes. It would also help ease the loss of Bacary Sagna (should he decide to move on). As such, this is looking like a pretty smart, affordable move!

What’s your take? Would Sime Vrsaljko be a good fit for the Gunners?
