LewandowskiTwo summers ago, Robert Lewandowski was the hottest prospect in world football. The Borussia Dortmund forward has been in sensational form for the last three-four seasons and has attracted the attention of numerous top clubs.

At some stage, however, it was assumed by the world at large that Lewandowski would end up at Bayern Munich and the speculation regarding his future ground to a stop.

Since then, we’ve heard very little about the Polish striker, but he certainly hasn’t stopped scoring. Last season he scored 36 goals in 49 games. This year he’s already scored 9 goals in 9 games, a truly fantastic return, for a man who is always under a lot of pressure to secure results for Dortmund.

His scoring record is among the best in world football and he deserves a role at a top club. Whilst it was assumed that this club would be Bayern Munich, that may not be the case any more.

Prior to Poland’s game against England, Robert Lewandowski spoke candidly about his future:

“I will be able to sign a contract (with any club) in January, but I have never said that I will sign a contract with Bayern. It was a misunderstanding. It is true I had an opportunity to speak with Sir Alex Ferguson (last year), but we didn’t mention the transfer. One day I would like to play in Premier League. It would be a great experience.” (Source: The Mirror)

As somebody who watches a lot more Premier League football than Bundesliga football, this is extremely exciting news indeed. I can’t wait for Lewandowski to get a shot at proving himself in English football.

It strikes me that he has the perfect build, physicality and mentality to succeed in the Premier League. At 25-years-old, he’s just about to hit his peak. Now’s the right time for a club like Manchester United to swoop in and claim their man.

With Wayne Rooney’s future in almost consistent doubt, signing a striker with as much talent as Robert Lewandowski would be a very smart move. What’s more, given his contractual situation in Germany, it wouldn’t break the bank to bring him to Old Trafford.

If David Moyes can put together the right wage packet for the Pole, I’m sure he’ll be enticed. Bayern Munich may be a better side than United, but the Premier League is the best League in the world.

Let’s hope that he bears this in mind if and when David Moyes comes knocking.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move in for Robert Lewandowski?
