Should Arsenal battle it out for this £25m sensation?

Julian DraxlerThis must be the best it’s felt to be an Arsenal fans for some time (perhaps, say, eight years?). With Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Per Mertesacker, Mathieu Flamini and Olivier Giroud all in top form, the Gunners are a real competitive force this season.

They’re the Premier League’s in form team and the hope will be that Arsene Wenger takes all the good will and belief that he has produced and backs it up in the January transfer window. A few smart purchases and there’s no reason why Arsenal can’t be title-contenders this year.

According to The Star, Julian Draxler, a youngster who Arsenal went in for during the summer, could still be a target for the North London club. They even suggest that a £25m bid could be enough to help Arsene Wenger get his man.

That’s a lot of money for a 20-year-old, but given his prowess, he could well be worth it. Anybody who saw his goal during Schalke’s 1-0 victory over Basel in the Champions League will attest to his quality. It was a real stunner.

He oozes confidence on the ball, can ping passes about nicely and is also a threat in front of goal. Last season he scored 13 goals in 39 appearances, which is a great return for a young player.

Some may suggest that Arsenal already have enough gifted players in this area. But I don’t think this should play on Wenger’s mind too much. Julian Drexler is an absolutely sensational talent who could go on to become one of the best midfielders in world football. That seems like the kind of player that Arsenal should be investing in, regardless of their current player resource.

There are, however, numerous obstacles that stand in the way of a potential Arsenal deal. For a start, Draxler recently signed a new deal with Schalke, that will keep him in the Bundesliga until 2018.

What’s more, according to The Star, Jose Mourinho is interested in adding Draxler to his Chelsea side (no doubt so that he can find a way of marginalizing him some way). Whilst the Gunners aren’t exactly strapped with cash, they would likely find it difficult to compete with Chelsea’s financial prowess.

But Draxler does strike me as a player in the Arsenal mould. What’s more, Arsene Wenger is far better at developing young players than Jose Mourinho. That must provide some appeal for the German ace.

Who’s to say whether this deal will ever happen. The fact remains, however, that it would be a massive step forward for Arsenal and further evidence that they mean business.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal swoop in for Julian Draxler?
