Could Arsenal use this touch of Dutch class?

Dennis BergkampAs Arsenal haven’t won anything for the last eight years, it’s only natural that the club’s coaching staff would come under heavy criticism.

The fans often find it hard to believe that Arsene Wenger is capable of making mistakes, or bad decisions. The Frenchman still seems to have a certain untouchable aura about him. As a result, it’s the coaching staff who are often singled out for criticism.

Of course, they don’t get the plaudits when things are going right. For instance, very few people have praised Steve Bould for his role in improving Arsenal’s defense this season. Whilst Arsene has stripped his back-four down to its bare bones, Bould has added discipline and organisation to it.

There’s also been some concern about Arsenal letting key ex-professionals slip through their grasp. How, for instance, did the club let Patrick Vieira become an ambassador for Manchester City? The dynamic midfielder is City’s ‘Elite Development Squad’ coach and seems to play a prominent role at Eastlands.

Then there’s Tony Adams, who has tried his hand at being a manager and being a pundit and has thus far been unsuccessful at both. Surely he could have been tempted to work for Arsenal again had the club offered him a prominent role?

If the coaching staff are to win over the fans, they’ll need to make smart additions in the future. The club will certainly need to go after Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp when the opportunity arises.

Interestingly enough, the non-flying Dutchman recently spoke out about his future and his desire to play a part at Arsenal:

“The feeling Johan Cruyff has had for Barcelona, I have the same with Arsenal. At Arsenal it was a good click. I always enjoyed it. I never had a bad day there. It is always on my mind. It is part of my ambition to come back at some stage.”

“I can’t really plan ahead. I know I will be here [at Ajax] for at least another three or five years and then I don’t know. I don’t see myself being at Ajax for the rest of my coaching career. I don’t see myself as a manager. I see myself as being part of the coaching staff. I really enjoy that role, especially the individual training with the strikers.” (Source: The Mirror)

Getting Dennis Bergkamp to join Arsenal’s coaching staff would be a big win for the club. He’s not only one of the best strikers of all time, he’s one of the best footballers, full stop. Arsenal always focus on developing technically gifted players and Bergkamp will certainly be able to help in this regard.

The thought of Bergkamp developing Arsenal’s youngsters in his image is mouth-watering indeed. I only hope that the club’s top brass are listening!

What’s your take? Would Dennis Bergkamp be a smart addition to Arsenal’s coaching staff?
