Mesut OzilSigning Mesut Ozil could well be Arsene Wenger’s best move in years. There’s just no telling exactly how influential he will be this season, but should Arsenal win anything this season, it will likely be directly attributable his performances, or the belief that he inspires in the players around him and the fans.

The move was all the more surprising given what we know of Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman has never exactly been one to splash the cash. He tends to keep Arsenal’s purse strings tied nice and tight. But when it came to Mesut Ozil, he was willing to splash out £42.4m.

He was willing to essentially triple Arsenal’s transfer record.  That’s a big statement of intent. It’s also a vote of confidence in Mesut Ozil, a player who dazzled at Real Madrid and will surely leave his mark on the Premier League.

Who would be against him being the League’s best player this year?

Since his move to the Emirates, we’ve heard a lot from former team-mates. Most were confused, or angry as to why he left. Interestingly enough, Madrid defensive midfielder Sami Khedira recently spoke about the impact that Ozil would have in England.

“Arsenal had a strong team anyway, but Mesut makes them the best team in England. I am sure he can be the player that makes things happen for them and win them the championship. Mesut is a genius on the field, there is no other way to describe him.” (Source: The Mirror)

Khedira has played alongside Ozil at both club and international level. In other words, he knows what he’s talking about. He also spoke about ‘disappointment among players’ regarding Mesut’s sale.

We’ve already seen that he’s capable of driving Arsenal forward this year. His assists against Sunderland and his goal against Napoli stand out in particular.

His direct running, quick feet and unique passing ability are quite remarkable. The fact that he’s got Mathieu Flamini playing behind him, breaking up play also helps. The Gunners have now got one of the most well-rounded midfield’s in Europe.

Surely this year they’ll win some silverware? If the club can play the long-game and maybe add another striker this January, they should be a shoe in.

What’s your take? Can Mesut Ozil lead the Gunners to success this season?
