Xabi_AlonsoHaving just let go of Mesut Ozil, I find it hard to believe that Real Madrid aren’t working harder to keep a hold of Xabi Alonso. Whilst Isco has made a fantastic start to his career at the Bernabeu, there’s no substitute for experience and there’s certainly no substitute for Alonso’s passing range.

Alonso’s currently recovering from a broken foot and has had to watch younger players take his place in the team. He’s also in the final year of the Madrid contract he signed in 2009. As things currently stand, there’s been very little movement either way. It looks like Alonso will be allowed to leave this summer.

But where will he end up?

Naturally enough, he’s been linked to Liverpool. Indeed, in most parts, Alonso is still hailed as a Liverpool legend. Few can forget he way he drove the club forward and how he formed one of Reds’ all-time top midfield partnerships with Steven Gerrard.

We all know what he can offer. He’s one of the most accurate passers in world football. He’s also one of the smartest. He sees gaps in play, works the ball well and is always capable of delivering a killer pass. His speed of thought and natural instinct have served him well at Real Madrid, as they did during his time with Liverpool.

Yes, he’s 31-years-old now, but his ability isn’t dwindling. He was never exactly known for his pace any way. Like Andre Pirlo (who’s 34), Alonso will continue to make a big impact for a number of years.

Speaking of Pirlo, The Star claim that Juventus are lining up a replacement for the bearded maestro. They suggest that Xabi Alonso could be the man for the job.

This fact will hopefully put Brendan Rodgers on red alert. If Alonso does leave Real Madrid, it should surely be to re-join Liverpool?

After all, Alonso claims that he’s still a Liverpool fan and that he still follows the club with great interest. If this is true, he must surely fancy a chance to play alongside Steven Gerrard once more, providing service for Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez?

Whilst Alonso has no connection to Juventus, the Serie A club must hold plenty of appeal. It’s up to Brendan Rodgers and co. to extinguish this interest and make sure that Alonso knows that Liverpool is an option when he moves on.

Wouldn’t it be something to see Alonso back in a Liverpool shirt?

What’s your take? Should the Reds move back in for Xabi Alonso, or is it time to move on?
