Karim BenzemaEverybody knows that Arsenal needed to sign a striker this summer. The Gunners have a long, storied history packed full of some fantastic attacking talent. When you think of the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Nicolas Anelka, it’s amazing to think that Olivier Giroud, a good finisher, but limited footballer is Arsenal’s only out-and-out striker at the moment.

Yes, there’s Nicklas Bendtner, but I’d rather not talk about him if it’s not entirely necessary.

Given this need, it was typical that Arsene Wenger elected to spend £42.5m on a creative midfielder this summer. Mesut Ozil is sure to have a big impact in the Premier League, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Gunners are woefully short upfront.

At the moment, things are going well for Arsenal. They’re leading the Premier League and have look to have a real confidence about them. But, if Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey stop finding the back of the net and the goals dry up completely, what’ll happen then?

It’s my feeling that the January transfer window can’t come soon enough for Arsenal. If they can still be in the top two-or-three by the time the transfer window re-opens, then I genuinely believe they can challenge for the title this season.

Especially if they bring in a player like Karim Benzema. According to The Star, Arsenal ‘could move to end Karim Benzema’s Bernabeu nightmare’.

Want to know what Benzema’s nightmare consists of? He’s thus far scored four goals in seven outings for Real Madrid this season. Pretty horrific stuff, huh?

But he has been fairly wasteful this year. He’s also been accused of attitude problems in recent times. Beneath all the goal-scoring, there seems to be some reason for concern.

Indeed, he was the subject of some significant booing during Real Madrid’s recent 4-1 victory over Getafe. It comes to something when fans turn on a player in such a way.

Arsenal were believed to have been interested in Benzema throughout the summer. The Frenchman elected to stay at the Bernabeu, but I can’t help but wonder if recent events have changed his mind.

Maybe he’d fancy a move to a club whose manager knows how to get the most out of French talent. I’m sure he’d be keen to play alongside Mesut Ozil once more. Likewise, I bet Arsenal fans would be excited to see him join the club. He has the kind of goal-scoring ability, technical mastery and craft that the Gunners are calling out for.

There’s no word as to how much Benzema would cost Arsenal. But recent events may drive his price-tag down and we know that the Gunners now have money to spend.

Let’s see if Arsene Wenger can pull off another impressive deal.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners move in for Karim Benzema?

Benzema would be a great addition. We can get him for £35-40 million. But what if they do bid for him and the deal does not go through? Then, Arsenal are stuck with only one proven striker in Olivier Giroud. They could target Marco Reus. Maybe £30 million. Or maybe even Javier Hernández, he could come for £25 million, and could be a very valuable asset.

Benzema is not what Arsenal need, he’s very lazy and his movement isn’t good enough. I also think he’s not in the right places the majority of the time. He runs out wide to the left or right and sometimes deep, searching for the ball.
