Yohan CabayeOnly The Star could have twisted Yohan Cabaye’s apology to Newcastle fans into a suggestion that Arsenal have been given ‘new hope’ of signing the French midfielder.

Whilst the apology may have been forced as a result of the player’s circumstances (and failure to earn a move this summer), we should take his words at face value.

There’s no reason to start reading between the lines, or twisting his words. He made a mistake this summer, but it was a mistake that the great majority of us would have made were we in his position. It’s not difficult to see why a club like Arsenal would provide appeal to a Newcastle United player, especially after last season.

Whilst the Magpies look to have improved as a unit this season, it’s clear enough that they won’t be competing for European football. But Yohan Cabaye has the ability to play in Europe. In fact, he’d excel on that stage.

I can’t help but wonder if Yohan Cabaye gets frustrated with the lack of intelligent movement, or running from Newcastle strikers. For Cabaye to excel, he needs to work in partnership with the Magpie’s strikers and earn an understanding. As of yet, this just hasn’t happened with Papiss Cisse. Maybe it never will.

Despite this, Cabaye has said the following: “I want to forget what happened during the summer, I want to put it behind me and give everything for Newcastle every day, for the club and for my team-mates.”

If he’s willing to do that, I’m sure Newcastle fans will forgive him. The truth, however, is that he’s a player who’s always going to attract attention in the transfer market. There will likely come a day when Newcastle do have to let go of the crafty midfielder.

In that regard, Arsenal look like the right fit. After all, Arsene Wenger has a thing for technically gifted French midfielders. The Gunners midfield is stuffed with talent, but I dare say Cabaye would improve it.

The only thing that stands in the way of a potential deal is Arsene Wenger’s unwillingness to pay market value. If he does loosen the purse strings, however, then perhaps the time is right to sell?

Alan Pardew would receive an ample fee for the Frenchman, which could be reinvested on another midfielder and a striker. Indeed, if Newcastle play their cards right, they could come back even stronger.

What’s your take? Should Newcastle consider selling Yohan Cabaye?
