What impact will Manchester United’s disastrous transfer window have on their season?

Make no mistake. Manchester United have not been up to standard this summer. Sir Alex Ferguson left behind a wonderful legacy and David Moyes and Ed Woodward are already doing their best to tarnish it.

When Sir Alex was at the reigns, United could easily attract the best talent throughout Europe. This summer, however, the Red Devils seem to have repulsed every target they’ve come in contact with.

First Thiago Alcantara rejected Manchester United to team up with his old boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. Then there was United’s embarrassing pursuit of Cesc Fabregas a man whose Arsenal connections run much too deep.

The less said about Ander Herrera the better. The imposter story is destined to go down in footballing folklore. United also missed out on a loan move for Fabio Coentrao on deadline day, as they left it too late.

Indeed, the only (major) player they signed was Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini. The spent £27.5m on the lanky Belgium, who happened to have been available in August for just £23.5m due to a quirky release clause. This demonstrates a significant lack of forward planning on United’s part. This transfer window has been somewhat of a farce.

How have things come to this?

It comes to something when keeping Wayne Rooney is the crowning achievement of your summer. It may not be fair to blame Moyes, but he’s the easiest and most public target.

I’d love to get behind David Moyes, I really would. His achievements at Everton are admirable, but there’s simply no guarantee he’s capable of making the step up. He’s certainly not used to dealing with big budgets and I think it’s fair to say that this was a telling factor throughout the transfer window.

Of course, Moyes’s performance will be measured by results on the pitch. Should he guide his team to another Premier League title, all will be forgiven.

But with Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham all strengthening significantly, this will be a huge challenge. Arsenal even brought in Mesut Ovil for chrissakes. Given the lack of creativity in United’s midfield, why weren’t they pursuing the German international?

David Moyes has created a rod for his own back and I’m sure that fans will continue to beat him with it over the course of this season.
