Luke-ShawAfter a summer of dithering, David Moyes went all out on transfer deadline day. Not only did he sign his former charge Marouane Fellaini, he also attempted to sign Real Madrid full-back, Fabio Coentrao.

Unfortunately Madrid were unable to sign a replacement in time and the deal fell through. The club also failed to sign Everton defender Leighton Baines, who had been a long-term transfer target.  This was bad news for expectant Manchester United fans, but the move did provide tangible evidence that Moyes is after a new full-back.

Patrice Evra has been a fantastic servant for Manchester United over the years. With his pace, athleticism and energy down the flanks, he’s been a constant threat. The fact that he’s been able to combine this with genuine defensive ability has helped him to stand out from the crowd.

This combined with his attitude and leadership qualities make him a fine Manchester United captain. But he is 32-years-old. I’d say it’s about time that Moyes started thinking about his long-term successor.

The Star claim that David Moyes has ‘conceded defeat’ when it comes to Leighton Baines and won’t hassle Everton any further. Instead, he’s targeted Southampton’s sensational young left-back, Luke Shaw and may look to tie up a deal this January.

I think it’s fair to say that Shaw is one of the most highly regarded young players in the Premier League. He’s a sprightly, attacking minded left-back who loves to get forward and fire in crosses.

He may only be 18-years-old, but his pace, decision making and defensive ability are top notch. I think he’d make an excellent heir to Patrice Evra.

I’m not sure he’s quite ready to replace the Frenchman just yet. But there would be plenty of opportunities for the youngster to ease himself into the team as Evra’s career winds down.

The Star claim that he’d cost Manchester United around £25m. That’s a lot of money, but Shaw it matches Shaw’s already colossal reputation. He’s been compared to former Saints star Gareth Bale, who spent some time early in his career as a left-back.

If Shaw develops into half the player the Welshman has turned out to be, Manchester United will have made a fantastic investment.

Let’s just hope David Moyes is able to seal the deal this time!

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move in for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw?

Don’t hold your breath. Moyes has proven so far he cannot buy the right players, and does not play the right ones he has. Bringing a Manager in without any successful record, they should have given a chance to someone like Solkjaer who with Ferguson’s guidance would have continued the long successful tradition for United.
