Is this what the future holds for Manchester United in the transfer market?

Christian BentekeFor the last two-or-three years, Manchester United have been strongly linked to a series of creative midfielders. Stories regarding players like Wesley Sneijder, Luka Modric, Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas have come and gone, exciting and delighting fans in equal measure.

Of course, David Moyes ended up signing Marouane Fellaini, much to the chagrin of the United faithful. It’s not that Fellaini is a bad player. It’s not even that he’s unlikely to make an impact at Old Trafford. It’s just that the fans were hoping for more.

One consequence of the signing is that the Papers will have to work harder to construct rumours concerning Manchester United. It’ll be interesting to see what they cook up in the months leading up to the January transfer window.

It seems The Mirror have started early. They claim that David Moyes has his eyes on ‘Aston Villa’s Belgian ‘beast’ Christian Benteke’.

It’s hard to blame Moyes for having his attention grabbed by Benteke. The Belgian ace is one of the most powerful, fearsome contenders in the Premier League. He also has a remarkable goal-scoring record. He’s only had one full season in the Premier League, but it’s clear that he’s due a move to a big club some time soon.

He was also subject to a rather strange summer. After being subject to numerous different rumours, the Belgian bruiser handed in a transfer request, devastating Villa fans in the process. In the end however, Benteke signed a brand new £60k-a-week deal with Villa.

But that won’t prevent Villa from selling if the right offer comes in. Could Manchester United be the club to make it happen?

At the moment, United look extremely strong upfront. After all, they’re able to choose between Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck. The first two players would walk into more or less any team in world football, whilst Hernandez and Welbeck are extremely gifted footballers.

But consider this: Robin Van Persie is now 30-years-old. Whilst pace has never really been an asset for the Dutchman, it’s possible his powers will start to dwindle over the coming years. Then there’s the fact that Rooney’s contract is running down and there’s no sign that he’ll agree a new deal.

As such, I can’t help but feel that Benteke would represent an excellent investment. He’s only 22-years-old, but he’s already one of the best strikers in the Premier League. That sounds like Manchester United standard to me.

What’s your take? Should United move in for Christian Benteke?

I fuckin agree. Shinji kagawa is all we need. He is better than herrera etc. Why the fuck is he not being played over cleverly etc. Your the only person ive seen thats happy to point out what I see as obvious. Kagawa needs automatic first team selection. If not then why have him. And why did we not sign mezut ozil??? Carrick, kagawa and ozil. Thats a devastating midfield. Full of creativity. But we can still have creativity with carrick, fellaini and kagawa. Common sense seems to have left united when fergie retired and when gill also left. I love manchester united. Always have. Always will. But we need to get some common sense back. Real fast.

You idiots [sorry it the language used before that make me]give the man settle at the club. He has been in the job for what 3, 4 months and guys do you think that’s enough to know everyone at United esp. the playing staff? Now that’s not being supportive of the manager as fans and by the way Shinji is one player but Anderson why is he not playing? It’s a vast squad we have and trust me each player is stronger in different competitions island I think kagawa will be more useful in champions league
