Could this Spanish sensation be the solution to Manchester United’s woes?

Juan MataJuan Mata’s current situation at Chelsea is difficult to understand. How do you go from being your club’s most important player, to being something of an after thought?

The Spanish ace was in fine form throughout last season, using the ball well, controlling play and utilizing his technical ability to lead Chelsea onto important victories. Whilst he didn’t have the goal-scoring impact of Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez (although his 32 goals over the course of two seasons isn’t too shabby!), he deserved to be considered for the ‘Player of the Year’ award.

So what’s happened? Why has he been used so sporadically this season? The Spanish playmaker made only his second start of the season during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at Everton. Whilst he showed some neat touches and moved the ball about quickly, he didn’t have the cutting edge necessary to unlock a staunch Everton defense.

Is Jose Mourinho trying to stamp his mark on this team and put Mata in his place? Has something gone on behind the scenes that we don’t know about? Was Mourinho just trying to ease him back into this new Premier League season?

Either way, it’s started a conversation about Mata’s future. Towards the end of the summer, he was linked to clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham and PSG. He didn’t make a move in the end, but the speculation hasn’t stopped. Indeed, The Star claim that ‘an exit from Chelsea’ is ‘seemingly destined to happen’.

The red top suggests that Manchester United could be in the running to sign the 25-year-old. Wouldn’t the two be a perfect fit?

After all, The Red Devils are crying out for a creative midfielder. Marouane Fellaini was brought in this summer, but he’s a defensive midfielder. Whilst he has plenty of technical ability, he’s not known for his incisive passing.

Juan Mata, on the other hand, has already proven his ability in the Premier League. He’s a smart footballer, who works hard and always finds a way to contribute. Manchester United signing him would be a real coup. Not only would they fix their creativity issue, they’d also significantly weaken one of the rivals.

That sounds like a victory on all fronts. It won’t be easy, but if David Moyes can make this happen, his ‘Dithering Dave’ moniker will surely be put to bed.

What’s your take? Could Manchester United really sign Juan Mata?
