Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney was in the papers a lot this summer, picking up links to a variety of different teams. In particular, Arsenal and Chelsea were strongly linked to the English centre-forward.

In recent weeks, however, Wayne has been in the papers as a result of his horrific forehead gash, that kept him out of contention for England’s recent internationals. Some of the pictures we’ve seen of the injury look like something from a horror film. Don’t go hunting them down unless you’ve got a good handle on your gag reflex.

Rooney wasn’t ready to line up for England, but thanks to some special head gear, he was able to play for Manchester United last Saturday. He looked extremely fresh after his injury lay-off and managed to get on the score-sheet too.

David Moyes had the following to say about Rooney: “It was a nasty cut and it’s still tender, so we had to be careful with him, but he wanted to play and once he told me he was fine I had no hesitation. He’s scored a terrific goal and that will do him good. He even won a couple of headers for us, so that’s a good sign.”

That last sentence just goes to show how committed Wayne Rooney is once he steps onto the pitch. Whilst it’s not entirely clear he wants to stay at Manchester United, this hasn’t effected the amount of effort he’s willing to put in.

That’s why the England International will still make for an attractive proposition for clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea during the January transfer window. Indeed, The Mirror claim that Arsenal ‘are not joking about their intent to pursue Rooney’ once the transfer window re-opens.

They even suggest that a £40m move could be on the cards.

Earlier this summer, most fans couldn’t understand why Rooney would be willing to take a step down to play for Arsenal. It looked unlikely at the time.

But with Manchester United playing him out of position and failing to offer much creativity from the centre-of-the-park, Arsenal could well offer some appeal.

The Gunners have a midfield oozing with creativity. I’m sure Wayne would love to play in front of Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla. He’d also be able to join up with fellow England internationals, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott.

Given that  Arsenal have a new-found ability to spend big-money, perhaps this deal isn’t so unlikely after all. Could Wenger be about to pull off yet another huge transfer?

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really pull off a deal for Wayne Rooney?
