Could Arsenal pull off an even bigger signing next January?

Luis SuarezWhilst the signing of Mesut Ozil attracted the great majority of column inches, Arsenal did indulge in another deadline day curiosity.

Despite having had all summer to sort things out, the Gunners spent big swathes of deadline day attempting to seal a loan deal for Chelsea striker Demba Ba. Unfortunately for Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho stepped in and pulled the plug, leaving the club in an awkward position.

There simply wasn’t enough time to look at different targets, despite Arsenal’s pressing need.

This means that Arsenal now only have one proven striker at the club. This will remain the case, at least until January.

Arsenal’s only proven striker is Olivier Giroud, who is in excellent scoring form (he’s scored 4 goals in 5 games). But should he suffer from a dip in form, or get injured, the Gunners could be in trouble.

They’d have to play 20-year-old forward, Yaya Sanogo, who is yet to prove himself at the top level. Alternatively, Wenger could deploy Theo Walcott upfront (which would thus make Arsenal weaker down the flanks). Suffice to say, there aren’t a lot of options.

This is a strange position for the club to be in, especially given it’s strength in other areas. It would be a shame for Arsenal to miss out on silverware this year because they came up short in this one specific area.

With that in mind, it was interesting to see The Mirror claim that Arsene Wenger will make another ‘mega signing’ when the transfer window re-opens. They suggest that Arsenal will be keeping tabs on Luis Suarez throughout the course of this season, in lieu of a January move.

If there’s any truth to these claims, it will no doubt spark a thousand more think-pieces about the morality of such a move. Nobody would call Luis Suarez a role-model, but he is one of the world’s best strikers and is the exact sort of player Arsenal should be chasing.

Giroud is an out-and-out goalscorer with very little technical ability. Luis Suarez would be the perfect partner for him. He’s quick, graceful on the ball and can score from just about every position.

Of course, he’d cost a pretty penny. Arsenal have already had a £40m (and £1!) bid turned down. They’d have to go in even stronger this summer. Doing so would be a real mark of the club’s ambition.

Having Mesut Ozil and Luis Suarez on the same team? Now that’d be quite something. Let’s see if Wenger can pull this one off!

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Luis Suarez, or steer clear of the troublesome Uruguayan?
