Pundits have rightfully applauded Tottenham’s transfer activity this summer. The club has responded excellently to losing their star man and may even be stronger now than they were when Gareth Bale was still with them.
But spending so much money and bringing in so many fresh faces is something of a gamble, at least in the short term. You can label me a pessimist, but there could be some negative consequences attached to Tottenham’s loose purse strings.
For a start, it takes a while for new players to gel in a new League. With so many new stars battling it out for places in this Spurs squad, it could take a while for the club to hit a proper run of form. Perhaps that’s why they’re currently struggling to score a goal from open play?
All the competition for places has another knock-on effect: certain players will find their role in the squad usurped and could even be forced out of White Hart Lane.
Spurs’ midfield is particularly congested. New signings Christian
Eriksen, Etienne Capoue and Paulinho will have a big role to play this season. Sandro is also on his way back from injury and should end up as a first team regular.
So where does this leave fringe players like Lewis Holtby? Surely the German ace doesn’t have a chance of breaking into a midfield packed with so much talent?
There will be some who claim: ‘if he’s talented enough, he’ll make it’. But it’s not always that easy. Some times the opportunities don’t come, or opportunities are fluffed. Holtby is still new to the Premier League and deserves a run of games to adapt. I’m just not sure he’ll be given that this season.
The 11 appearances he’s made thus far do not bode well.
As a result, there’s been a fair amount of speculation regarding Holtby’s future. He may only have signed with Tottenham last January, but he could already be on the way out. According to The Star, his former club Schalke 04 could activate his buy-back clause and bring him back to Bundesliga.
If Spurs make a profit from the deal (Holtby cost them just £1.4m), they should do it.
Holtby seems determined to stay and fight it out at Tottenham, but I can’t help but wonder what would happen should the right offer come in. Perhaps it’s best for all parties that the youngster moves on and looks to build his career elsewhere?

Holtby is too small too slow and out of his class to make it at Spurs.
That’s why he was so cheap.
Would be foolish to let Holtby leave and I don’t think they will.
The last three seasons Spurs problem has been a lack of depth, now they finally have 2 players for each position pretty much and people assume that some players have to be on their way out.
Realistically Holtby is competing with Eriksen and Sigurdson for the AM role, with Holtby and Siggy able to operate a little deeper. Unless Holtby asks to leave Siggy will be the one to go.
Spurs have two creative no 10s that can feed Soldado – Holtby and Eriksen. Why would they unload one of them?

What has Holtby done to be labeled “star” at Spurs ? He had a bad first season (after january) was slow and made a lot of mistakes. I would not be surprised if he would be sold in janury.
Holtby has a hugh chance to make it.
He might have to except squad rotation, but he can play as a creative number 6, or beside Eriksen in a 4 1 4 1 formation
