Will Arsenal fans be excited or frustrated by this potential £5m signing?

Matthias GinterGiven Arsenal’s lack of spending during this transfer window, I’m sure fans won’t want to see their club get linked to yet another young talent.

Arsene Wenger has always been held-up as a ‘expert’ in signing young players with big futures, but given the club’s current standing in the game, most are holding out for ready-made, world-class talent.

The Gunners claimed a fourth place finish on the last day of last season. What’s more, they were lucky to do so.

As their North London rivals Tottenham have strengthened, Arsenal have got weaker and weaker. This summer was supposed to be the one where Arsene Wenger loosened the purse strings and started splashing the cash.

This just hasn’t happened. The club’s showing in the Emirates Cup will only have intensified the need for marquee signings.

So what are we to make of The Mirror‘s suggestion that Arsene Wenger is looking to tie up a £5m deal for another 19-year-old prodigy?

The young chap in question is Freiburg defensive midfielder Matthias Ginter.

Taking a look at the player’s background, there’s something that stands out – something that makes him a good fit for a club like Arsenal. Whilst he’s a defensive-minded player, he spent some time in his career playing as a striker (in fact, he scored 14 goals in 25 appearances for the Freiburg U19s back in 2010/11).

The ability to combine defensive know-how and a willingness to get forward and provide a goal threat must be a real draw for Arsene Wenger. The Professor values attacking endeavour over everything else, so it’s perhaps not all that surprising that he should find Ginter an intriguing prospect.

As ‘one for the future’, this looks like an extremely smart move on the part of Arsene Wenger.

At just 19-years-old, Ginter is physically tough, well disciplined and highly committed. These qualities, combined with his youthful exuberance, make him a real handful.

If he continues to develop at a similar rate, there’s a good chance he’ll establish himself among the very best defensive midfielders in world football.

My only hope is that too much pressure isn’t applied to the youngster too soon. Last season provided plenty of evidence that Arsenal have a pressing need for a defensive midfielder. The Gunners need to sign a ready-made talent in this area if they’re to improve next season.

For now however, let’s not let Arsenal’s sluggish approach to the transfer market undermine what would be a descent signing in it’s own right.

What’s your take? Are you excited to see Arsene Wenger chase 19-year-old Matthias Ginter?

The only thing wrong with him is the fee. He is likely to fetch double that as interest grows.
If Arsenal want him they need to put a serious bid in – £7m would be a good starting point.

Considering the depth (down the sewers) to which Arsenal FC has sunk lately, Ginter would be transfer “coup” for the club! At best Manager, Arsene Wenger and CEO, Ivan Gazidis are a pair of (hog) balls and worst, a duo of filthy dick-heads. To hell with these two idiots.
