Isn’t it surprising, given the David Moyes connection and Manchester United’s need for a midfielder, that the club hasn’t gone in harder for Marouane Fellaini before this point?

They’ve clearly been distracted by something, or perhaps somebody in particular. David Moyes and co. have spent so much time pursuing Cesc Fabregas, that they’ve missed out on good opportunities a little closer to home.

Signing Fabregas was never really possible. His Arsenal connections are still much too strong and he’s clearly desperate to make his mark at the Nou Camp.

It’s about time that Manchester United started considering other options and Fellaini looks like the perfect solution.

According to The Mirror, David Moyes has ‘launched a bid’ for the big, bulky Belgian, who could be United’s first major signing this summer.

Fellaini has a £23.5m release clause written into his Everton contract. As it happens, it’s believed that United aren’t willing to cough up this much money (despite having gone in much higher on Fabregas). This is likely to be a sticking point in the deal.

Roberto Martinez has just taken over at Goodison Park and will be desperate to keep hold of his brightest and best. He certainly wont want to let Fellaini go without a fight.

United do hold two cards in their favour. As previously mentioned, there’s the Moyes connection. Both player and manager share a good working relationship and I’m sure the two would be keen to re-unite.

Then there’s the fact that United can offer Champions League football and a good chance of silverware. We’ve seen from the Luis Suarez saga that these qualities tend to be very attractive for ambitious players.

If United up their interest, there’s a chance that Fellaini could start pushing for a move.

It won’t be an easy deal to engineer, but United have some experience with difficult negotiations this summer. Signing a player like Fellaini, whose strength, technique and presence is staggering, would help United to come back even stronger next season.

What’s more, it may help Moyes to adapt to his new surroundings quicker.

Either way, let’s hope that this deal doesn’t drag on. With the new Premier League season fast approaching, there’s plenty of work to be done.

What’s your take? Would Marouane Fellaini be a good addition to this Manchester United squad? Should David Moyes give up his pursuit of Cesc Fabregas?

I think Fellaini is a great player but why is everyone pushing so hard for this transfer to happen? Every day new stories about this potential tranfer come out and yet there is little to no substance to them.

If Moyes doesn’t sign a notable midfielder this summer, and we lose a couple of opening games, the fans will turn against him fast. Come on Moyes get Fellaini signed, and play him next to Carrick in a 4 2 3 1 system. That will win us the league, and see us back in the semis of the champions league. United forever! ! ! !
