Has the Premier League lost its Shine?

premier_league_logoSo the weekend came and brought about the beginning of the most anticipated Premier League season yet! There were so many things to witness: The return of the Special One, Manchester United began life after Fergie, Tottenham and their flurry of new signings, to mention just a few. But after a few days, I must admit I feel a little disappointed.

Having watched games from the Spanish Primera Liga, the Bundesliga, and the Juventus-Lazio game, I must admit, the Premier League offered no game that was exciting enough to rival, or at least contend for match of the weekend. It reminded me of an earlier assertion by some writer, that Barclay’s Premier league has lost its quality, and excitement.

Its hard to argue with that at the moment. The top teams really didn’t show any potency at all. Chelsea could only clumsily put two past Hull, and Manchester United were efficient, but far from their best. Arsenal lost convincingly and rejuvenated (in personnel) Tottenham couldn’t justify their big summer spending with a performance to match the millions. Liverpool for all their noise are really just another pack of toothless bulldogs!

Judging by the performance of the top rated teams, English Football is among the worst of the top rated leagues. Many may argue otherwise and I may even get stabbed in the leg while walking home for saying this, but the truth is, none of the English Teams (Top Dogs) performed like European Championship material. A motivated Real Betis could well put 5 past United, Chelsea, and Tottenham and perhaps even 10 past Liverpool

I may very well swap my Premier League Matchdays for some Bundesliga or La Liga action. English teams are just not exciting enough anymore; they play unattractive brands of football and look nothing like winners. Its no surprise United won by so many last season!

Even the transfers may well reflect that. The biggest transfer targets all went to other leagues, not one of the truly ‘marquee’ signings came the BPL. Falcao went to France, Neymar went to Barcelona, Isco chose to go to a star studded Madrid, and even Guardiola preferred Germany! This says a lot about the state of British Football at the moment, the quality of the premier league. Of the top 5 players in the world right now, none play in England (Ronaldo, Messi, Iniesta, Falcao, Fabregas).

So maybe its time we all put on some black and mourned the death of the Premier League.

What’s your take? Has the Premier League lost its shine?

It may not have performed well in Europe recently but the EPL still boads the most even playing field from the top to the bottom of the league. That makes for a more open title race and more games carrying more weight than in other leagues where two teams are heaps ahead of the rest (Bayern/Dortmund and Barcelona/Real Madrid).

In addition the opening weekend fixtures werent the most exciting matchups. Chelsea v. Hull, Tottenham v. Crystal Palace, Arsenal v. Aston Villa. You wont see any of those matchups in a cup final.

firsly. your top five players in the world should include Gareth Bale, who does play in England, even if at the moment that means only on FIFA 13.

interesting that you can draw such conclusions after just one game. teams need time to get going just like the players need time to gel and link, Spurs again as an example, fielded 4 debutants. now to expect them to play seamless fluid football straight away is asking a lot.

“playing unattractive brand of football and look nothing like winners.” Which games were you watching?!?! Chelsea had moments of brilliance, Liverpool looked like a team fired up and ready and Man City stylishly demolished Newcastle.(ok with some help from the opposition)

Also, comparing the leagues is different to comparing the top teams in each league. So, for a real interpretation of which is the best, the most exciting league, may I suggest a study of the entire league. Perhaps study the change in movement of final positions between clubs in the top 5 or top 10 and then at least you would have some numbers or stats to back up your claim. I doubt you’ve watched every match from each league.

i’m sure you just needed to fill your blog, so fair enough, but it didn’t enthuse me to read it again.
