With all the furore surrounding Arsenal’s bids for Luis Suarez, it’s easy to forget that they’re also on the hunt for a holding midfielder. The same is true for Manchester United, who are looking for another creative midfielder this summer, having missed out on Thiago Alcantara and under-bid on Cesc Fabregas.
Believe it or not, there’s one player out there who ticks both boxes for both clubs. That man is Marouane Fellaini, Everton’s big Belgium midfielder. Fellaini is one of the most versatile players currently plying his trade in the Premier League. He can play as a centre-back, he can play as a holding (or defensive) midfielder and he can play further up the pitch in more attacking positions. He’s even spent a fair amount of time playing as a striker during his time at Goodison Park.
If United need somebody to provide a spark of creativity, he can do it. Fellaini has excellent technical ability, grace and poise when he’s on the ball. He’s capable of flicks and tricks, but he can also pick out killer passes, get in dangerous positions and find the back of the net. David Moyes knows exactly what the 25-year-old can offer. It would surprise nobody if he tried to buy Fellaini off of his old club.
But Fellaini can also fill a gap in Arsenal’s squad. Ever since Alex Song left the Emirates last summer, the Gunners have been short of strength and physical prowess in their midfield. Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta are good players, but they’re not exactly imposing (neither are Aaron Ramsey or Tomas Rosicky for that matter). Fellaini, on the other hand, cuts an absolutely colossal figure.
He wins just about every header, isn’t afraid to throw himself about and can be a very effective defender on his day. His ability to mix things up and support the attack would also be an asset for a club that values fluidity in its players.
With this in mind, I’d argue Arsenal is a better fit for Fellaini. Arsenal’s need is more pressing and requires more versatility. There’d always be a place for the Belgium in the Gunners’ squad.
If Arsene Wenger is interested, he’ll have to act quickly. According to The Metro, Fellani’s £22m release clause will run out on the last day of this month. Following this, Everton will become increasingly difficult to negotiate with.
So let’s see if Arsene Wenger can beat David Moyes to his old Everton charge!
What’s your take? Would Marouane Fellaini fit in better at Arsenal or Manchester United?
